●At his last follow-up in the Infectious Disease Unit,
he had no new symptoms that were consistent
with progressive Chagas’ disease and treatment
with nifurtimox was begun, approximately 18
months after the diagnosis was made.

●Amyloidosis can cause cardiac-conduction
defects and thrombi, and neuromuscular and
mucosal infiltration of the gastrointestinal tract
could lead to colonic dysmotility.
●Tests
for hypercoagulability (including a test for lupus
anticoagulant; functional tests for antithrombin
III, protein C, and protein S; and an assay for
resistance to activated protein C) were normal,
with no evidence of a factor V Leiden mutation
or lupus anticoagulant.
