You can live conveniently in Tokyo because public transportation is well established. For example, I often went out for dinner with my friends when I was a student. Especially after the exam, I looked forward to going for a beer, and it was really helpful that I could use subway until around midnight. It is still impressive even now that the last train was full of people who was going home after having fun.
