Walaupun pasukan Jepang sudah terlebih dahulu mendarat di Morotai dan membangun pangkalan udaranya,mereka meninggalkan pangkalan tersebut untuk mendirikan pangkalan di Pulau Halmahera, hanya menyisakan batalyon kecil di Morotai.
