Many elderly persons, before inquiry, may be only vaguely aware of the experience as a function of their defensive structure.But alterations in defensive operations do occur. Speaking broadly, the more intense the unresolved life conflicts, the more work remains to be accomplished toward reintegration.Although the process is active, not static, the content of one’s life usually unfolds slowly; the process may not be completed prior to death.

そして、人生に対する評価は思い出の同義語ではなく、この思い出を含むこと。これは単なる思い出したくない記憶を読み起こすことや、意図的に見つけ出すことだけではなく、両方起きる可能性がある。人生に対する評価はあるとき気づかないうちに静かに行う。多くのお年寄りは、聞かれる前にその経験が防御機能のひとつとしてかすかに思う。しかしながら、防御過程中の修正は確かにある。広くいえば、人生の解決できていない葛藤が多いほど、全体にまとめなおそうとする仕事が多くなる。その過程は活発で静的ではないが、人の人生の中身は通常ゆっくり広がる。その過程は死ぬ直前まで完了しない。

従って、人生を振り返ること(the life review)は回想(reminiscence)とは同義ではないが、回想はそれを含んでいる。求められていない思いでの回想と、目的を持って思い出すことは、同時に起こりうることであるが、それぞれ単独の事象ではない。人生の振り返りはしばしば音を立てずに、表出することなく訪れる。調査前、多くの高齢者は経験的に防衛本能が働いていることを、漠然としか自覚していないと思われる。しかし防衛的な行動の変更は必ず起こる。大雑把にいえば、解決されていない人生の葛藤が多ければ多いほど、再統合に向けて達成させるべき仕事が残る。機能がよどみなく動いていても、その人の人生の内容はゆっくりと明らかになっていくもである。この過程はその人が死ぬよりも先には完了しない。
