Le ballet existe en tant que pièce autonome, mais peut aussi s'intercaler entre les scènes d'un opéra ou d'une pièce de théâtre, à titre de divertissement. Le ballet de cour français, à la fois instrumental et vocal, est contemporain des premiers essais de monodie dramatique à Florence (les « intermèdes », à la fin du xvie siècle). C'est de la tradition du ballet de cour que sont issus les opéras-ballets et les comédies-ballets de Lully et Molière.

Although ballets exist as an autonomous piece of art, they can also be intercalated between the scenes of an opera or a stage play, for entertainment purposes.
French court ballet, which included both instrumental and vocal performances, was contemporary with the very first attempts to compose dramatic monodies in Florence (the « intermèdes », at the end of the sixteenth century).
Opéra-ballets, as well as the comédie-ballets of Lully and Molière originated from the tradition of court ballet.
