They used the stoves, too, in Hokkaido and North-east district where the cold winter is so severe, and firewood and coal were used for the fuel.

Mostly the hearths in the East Japan and both the herths and the ovens were employed in the West. The wide usage of non-solid fuel such as gas or oil, or of the cooking stoves, remained within quite limited areas of the big cities. and around They used the inefficient traditioanal ovens in the farming households, and a kitchen improvement campaign of farm villages began from toward the end of 1910s, which, however, had to await the better living movement in 1950s when the full-scale improvement of the ovens were realized. Nonetheless the Western ovens were also used in fact in Tokyo.

And its fuel is woods and coals.

In eastern region of Japan, a hearth was commonly used, and in that of western region, both a hearth and a kitchen stove are used.

In Hokkaido and Tohoku area where the winter is bitter cold, stoves were also used, and wooden logs and charcoal were used for the fuel.

In eastern Japan irori fireplace were solely used, and in western Japan irori fireplace and furnace were both used. Before the war, usage of non-solid fuels such as gas or petroleum oil, which means the usage of stove, were only limited mainly to large cities. In farmhouses, inefficient conventional furnaces were used, and in the end of 1910s kitchen improvent movement in the farming community started, but full-scale improvement of furnaces had to wait until the life improvement diffusion operation in the 1950s. However, Western furnaces were used in Tokyo.
