パンジャブの新首都Chandigarhの建設は1951年に始まった。

旧ボリバル広場は、いまでは大聖堂（2）が設置され、国会議事堂（3）は拡張工事される予定。その辺り一帯には新市庁舎（6）が置かれる見通しであり、超高層ビルに政府各省庁並びに大統領官邸が置かれる。新広場では、ランプによって様々なレベルの道がつながれ、歩行者天国のため確保される予定。

チャンディーガル、パンジャブの新しい中心地の建設は、1951年に開始された。
