東京オリンピックはスポーツの祭典にとどまらず、戦後のデザイナーが総力を挙げて取り組んだ一大デザインプロジェクトでもあった。
田中一光をはじめとする当時の若手デザイナーたちが、施設案内のためのピクトグラムや、プログラムや会場案内図などの制作に組織的に取り組んだという。
