まず、ラフティングとは、ラフトボート（5～8名程が定員）ごとに、漕艇やレスキューの技術を身に付けたガイドが乗り合わせ、参加者はガイドの指示に従ってパドルを動かし、みんなで力を合わせて川を漕ぎ下っていくアウトドア・スポーツです。
日本では約10年程前から人気が高まり、日本全国の河川でラフティングツアーが行われていますが、世界では30年以上の歴史があります。ラフティングがポピュラーなアメリカでは、体験者人数は3000万人以上といわれています。
