As they go up the streams, to their original grounds, they are picked off by numerous predators, particularly bears, who often take their kill up into trees to eat.

The remaining carcass is often left on the ground near the tree. And other remains often pass through the bear at nearby trees, still containing lots of nutrients.

We’ve got two threads of evidence about this. One is ethnographic evidence of recent hunter-gatherers and other technologically unsophisticated peoples. They don’t have the conditioners and gels and blow dryers and such that we do, but they definitely did all kinds of grooming.
