Opera, the company behind the Opera and Opera Mini browser, has just launched a new mobile browser for the iPad called Coast. The project first started off when Huib Kleinhout, an engineer and team manager at Opera, proposed to the president of engineering to build a browser specifically for mobile devices. He believed that browsers brought too much of their desktop legacy to the mobile, from the back and forward buttons to the URL search bar.

なぜVimeoのOperaブラウザーからiPad用に新しいブラウザーを作成したのか。

Huib comes from a village called Varik, in the Netherlands that has a population of about 2,000. Built a hundred meters from a river, the village had to be evacuated when waters threatened to wipe out the area in 1995. Huib studied at Eindhoven and graduated with a masters in technology and society, a hybrid between social and technical sciences, completing his thesis at Philips Research. His design-focused time at Eindhoven and Philips Research inspired him.

“In this environment, thousands of engineers are working on R&D projects and it was all about inventing new stuff.”

Huib is also a co-inventor of some patents for Philips Research that formed the basis of multi-touch.

What drove Head of Coast by Opera, Huib Kleinhout, to redesign the mobile Internet browser?

The browser wars have long been waged, leaving behind casualties like Netscape. With the emergence of mobile devices, this fight has been given a new battlefield. Apple and Google have been consistently trying to outplay each other, providing ways for users to seamlessly bring their browsing activities across all devices. Meanwhile, other players, like Dolphin, are hoping to serve different user demands.

Shoop! is integrated with more than fifteen platforms such as Kaskus, TokoBagus, and BukaLapak to mention a few. Shoop! got the second place of the best graduates on this batch.

8. WarmGreet

WarmGreet is an online platform that helps increase the users’ engagement and loyalty towards brands. WarmGreet provides some features that allow users to earn virtual points, which can later be redeemed for product discounts and other benefits. Virtual points can be collected by promoting the brands such as tweeting or recommending brands to friends.

7. Shoop!

As a part of its commitment to support the development of Indonesia’s tech scene, Indosat will launch an incubator called ideabox. ideabox will provide facilities and resources for developers and entrepreneurs, such as co-working spaces. The incubator will be active by the end this year.

Bonus: 11. Foreign educated startups: As I wrote before there’s a new generation of young founders who were educated abroad and then came back to Vietnam to start a business. This more educated group understands the Western way of thinking and can apply those principles to Vietnam’s economy.

Now, if all of the above continues its momentum, we may see Vietnam fulfilling Son Tran’s startup prophecy that Vietnam’s scene will continue to increase until 2015. Well, here’s hoping.

Bonus: 11. 海外で教育を受けたスタートアップ達：
以前にも書いた通り、今海外で教育を受けてベトナムに戻りビジネスを立ち上げた新しい世代の起業家が生まれてきている。　このような高度な教育を受けて西洋の思想が理解できるものはベトナムの経済にも応用していくことだろう。

そして今、もしそのような動きに拍車がかかれば、Son Tran氏のスタートアップの予言である２０１５年までにベトナムは大きく発展して行くという予言はまさに当たるであろう。　そう願うばかりだ。

10. A growing number of startup initiatives: 5desire, Hatch.vn, Startup.vn, Startups.vn, Saigon Hub, Start Center, Hub.IT, Seedfund.vn, VYE Bootcamp, Launch, Action Space, and Founders Institute are just a few initiatives that have been growing, especially in the last year. We’ve seen a steady explosion of co-working spaces, listing sites, events, and programs that adapt to the needs of startups in the ecosystem. If this growth keeps pace, we will see a healthy and mature startup scene by the end of next year. And by healthy, I mean startups that can raise money, possibly exit, or acquire staggering amounts of users.

9. A network of people that get things done: Vietnam has long had a reputation for being a hard nut to crack. It’s not nearly as open and easy to access as its neighbors. Despite this, a strong network of people connects Vietnam’s two major cities and it requires just a few steps and legal hurdles to get in. If you look at the recent McDonald’s entrance, it’s a classic story of how the impossible is made possible in Vietnam via connections. All the other major businesses that successfully opened offices in Vietnam also understand this, including Samsung, Nokia, Rocket Internet, Microsoft, etc.

Vault Dragon: Dropbox for physical things

You are a college student in Singapore who’s about to fly home during the term break. You sit in a bed in a rented apartment, and realize you’re screwed: You don’t want to pay the expensive rent for the three months you’re away, but giving up the place means you’d lack a room to store your things.

That’s a problem Tseng Ching Tse and Vishesh Mittal wants to solve.

With a killer one-line elevator pitch — a Dropbox for physical things — Vault Dragon has eyes trained on an industry its founders say is ripe for disruption: Self-storage.

Vault Dragon: 荷物保管のストーレージ

あなたが学期末の休暇のため家に戻るシンガポールの大学生だとする。賃貸アパートのベッドに座り困ったなと考えている：３ヶ月の休暇の期間賃料を払いたくない。かといって解約したら荷物の保管場所に困ってしまう。

この問題を解決してくれるのはTseng Ching Tse氏とVishesh Mittal氏の両人である。

一列のエレベータピッチの荷物倉庫ーVault Dragonは自分で保管するというアイデアを熟成させたと創設者は語る。

Here’s how it works: Users whip out their smartphones and open the Vault Dragon mobile app to schedule a delivery. A vault arrives at the appointed time. After placing the items into the tough, industrial grade box, they snap a picture with the app to document what’s inside, and with the same app, arrange for a pickup. It’s similar to United States startup Clutter, which just launched in Los Angeles.

Vault Dragon is a contrast from how self-storage works today: A company typically rents a warehouse, then ‘sublets’ it for weeks at a time to others. Customers then drive down to the location to deposit their stuff, and return again to retrieve it.

利用の仕方：利用者はスマートフォンにVault Dragonのモバイルappをダウンロードし配達日の設定を行う。Vault Dragonが予定の日に届いたら、業務用の頑丈な箱の中に預ける荷物を納める。　その際appで保管物の写真をとり、又そのappを利用してピックアップを依頼する。米国ロスアンジェルスでローンチされたstart upのClutterに似ている。

Vault Dragonは現在のセルフストーレージとは違っている：普通業者は倉庫を借りてそれを数週間単位で利用者に又貸しをする。　利用者はその倉庫に出向き自分の荷物を保管したり、取りに戻って来たりする。

How one Chinese e-commerce site turns its shoppers into models

As confirmed by a recent study, many women like to check out other woman’s appearances. Whether its hair, clothes, or possessions, it apparently stems from some primal desire to get ahead. The Chinese e-commerce site Vancl has long realized this, encouraging its own customers to model clothes they’ve bought from the site.

中国eコマースの利用者がモデルに？
最新の研究で明らかになったのは、女性は他の女性が何を身につけているかが気になるということである。髪型、洋服、小物のどれをとっても他の女性の先端を行きたいという欲望から発生しているのであろう。中国のeコマースサイトVanclはそれを以前から承知していたので、自サイトで購入した洋服をユーザーが着用しモデルとなってくれる事を推奨している。

Despite this interesting engagement with its female user-base, Vancl is still struggling in China’s cut-throat e-shopping sector. In the latest market share figures for Q2 this year, Vancl seems to have lost market share, dropping a few places to become China’s tenth biggest e-commerce site. While it’s still the biggest clothing-only e-tailer in the country, it’s a tough industry. Vancl is aiming for 50 percent growth this year, but its much-vaunted IPO seems unlikely.

このように女性user用に面白い工夫をこなしているVanclでも中国の厳しいeショッピングのセクターでは以前激しい競争を強いられている。本年度のQ2期のマーケットシェアーは国内のeコマースサイトのランキングで１０位に転落した。中国内では洋服のみのeテイラーでは最大規模とはいえ大変な産業である。Vanclは本年度５０％の成長率を目標としているが新規株式公開を誇るにはまだまだのようだ。

DeltaViet is the Udemy of Vietnam, bringing online education to the masses

Online education is currently one of the hotter trends in Asia (and possibly the world). It’s something that Bill Gates and Steve Jobs both ruminated on. They were surprised that it hadn’t been revolutionized. But others have carried on with the concept, and there’s been huge strides in the field – from Salman Khan and his Khan Academy, to Coursera and its close ties to the world’s universities, to Udemy and its practical courses. Well, the concept that Udemy started is already in Vietnam, and growing.

ベトナムのUdemy, "DeltaViet"、一般大衆へのオンライン教育が始まる

オンライン教育は現在アジアではとても人気が高い（世界中でだが）
Bill Gates氏やSteve Jobs氏といった人達が考え出したものだが、当時はそれほど革命的な変化を起こさなかった事がふしぎであった。しかしコンセプトは引き継がれ、今では大きな進歩を遂げたーSalman Khan氏のおこしたKhan Academyに始まり、Courseraなど世界中の大学との提携やUdemy の実践的なコースなど。　Udemyのコンセプトはベトナムに根付き始め伸びている。

DeltaViet is one of the first movers in the new field of online education in Vietnam. With 500 students and 13 courses already on just for May this year, it’s off to a healthy start. Most of the courses currently are focused on practical life skills like ”how to get your children to take care of themselves” and ”skills for being creative.” Minh Nguyen, co-founder and CEO, says the site is hoping to get more, namely in practical IT skills and other areas that enhance people’s daily or career lives.

今年５月には既に１３のコースで５００人の生徒が始めており好調なスタートを切っている。
現在ほとんどのコースが実生活に結びついた　"どうやって自分の面倒が見れる子供にするか"や
”クリエーティブな技術”等が殆どだ。　CEOで創設者の一人であるMinn Nguyen氏によると、人々の日常生活やキャリアーをのばすことの出来る、例えばもっと実践的なIT技術や他の分野のウェブサイトを増やして行きたいと述べている。

A quick look at DeltaViet’s numbers

Currently, DeltaViet’s mainly collecting money via SMS banking, wherein a potential student would use the same scratchcard that they use to top up their SIM to pay for their online course. This makes up to 90 to 92 percent of DeltaViet’s revenues. Five percent comes from internet banking like NganLuong and three percent is from students coming into the office to pay by cash. But the really interesting thing is 50 percent of DeltaViet’s 500 students are in the countryside, outside of Vietnam’s top cities; Ho Chi Minh city itself accounts for 30 percent of students, and Hanoi for 20 percent. In other words, DeltaViet’s got legs outside of the city.

DeltaVietの数字に関して

現在DeltaViet ではSMS bankingが最大の徴収方法となっている。
オンラインコースの支払いは、SIMカードをチャージする為に使用するスクラッチカードを利用する事が出来る。この方法は総収入の９０から９２％を占めている。　５％はNganLuongなどのネットバンキングで、３％は実際に事務所に現金で支払いにくる方法である。しかし興味深いのはDeltaVietの５００人の生徒の内５０％は大都市から離れた地方に住んでいる。そして３０％が
ホーチミン市でハノイ市は２０％である。　つまりDeltaVietは都会から地方へと大きく広がっているといえる。

Just like Udemy, DeltaViet collects between 30 to 50 percent of the revenue and 50 to 70 percent goes to the teachers. That’s after the telcos skim off the top with their 15 to 20 percent transaction fees.

Every course on DeltaViet, unlike Udemy, also has quizzes. Since, according to Minh, Vietnamese students may not actually watch and apply the things they learn via video. Thus, if students do not complete assignments in the courses they sign up for, they get demerits on their account. If a student has too many demerits, they may fail to get the certificate that DeltaViet awards after completion. Note: currently, DeltaViet’s certificates are only recognized by certain partners and have no academic standing.

UdemyのようにDeltaVietも30~50%の収益をあげており、その内15~20%はTelcosへの業務手数料となり残りの50〜70%が先生の給料となる。

しかしUdemyとは違いDeltaVietの全コースでは小テストが課せられる。　Minh氏によるとベトナム人の生徒は実際にビデオをみたり習った事を応用するとは限らないそうだ。　
そのため生徒が宿題を提出しなければそのコースでは減点を受ける事となる。余り減点を続けるとDeltaVietがコース終了後に発行する証書を貰えなくなってしまう。　注：DeltaVietの証書は現在学術的な意味を持たず、ある一定のパートナー間のみ評価されている。
