How to tie your marketing metrics to real business results (5 steps)

Marketers love metrics. Any acronym that starts with a capital C makes a marketer’s ears perk up — CPA, CPL, CPC, CPM, CTR. But while these metrics make perfect sense to marketers, there’s a common problem in connecting them back to actual business results. The root of the problem is that marketing teams don’t often do the upfront legwork to connect their marketing metrics to financial metrics. Having gone through this process myself, I’ve laid out a simple five-step process that other marketing teams can follow to better align their metrics with the business results the rest of the company cares about.

1. Determine your source(s) of truth

The first step is to make sure everyone in the organization is speaking the same language when talking about business objectives and defining company success.

Dig into your CRM, or whatever database houses your customer data. Make sure you can clearly articulate what information you’ll need to get from your database to help you measure marketing performance. Most importantly, customer data needs to be tagged with marketing campaign data or you’ll never be able to connect the dots.

Even if you think you have the cleanest CRM since Salesforce brought them to the cloud, it’s a critical first step to invest some time and resources on a data hygiene project. Not only will this save tons of time and energy down the line, but more importantly, it gets a cross-functional team working together and speaking the same language. There are always things you can do, from deduplication to improving lead routing process, follow up SLAs, and automated scoring.

Meerkat CEO explains the secret to the app’s success: ‘We didn’t have to do a lot’

Overnight, live-streaming app Meerkat became the “it” thing in app-happy San Francisco this spring. Everybody seemed to be doing it.

Suddenly, Twitter acquired Periscope in mid-March and shortly afterward cut off Meerkat’s access to the Twitter social graph. Then at the end of March, Meerkat announced that Greylock Partners, known for backing social media companies, was putting money behind the startup.

I figured that Meerkat, which said in May that it had 2 million users, had done a lot to engineer such excitement. So I called up Meerkat cofounder and chief executive Ben Rubin to ask him what sorts of growth hacking techniques the startup had engaged in.

“We didn’t have to do a lot,” Rubin told me.

It was a little shocking, considering that Meerkat and Periscope have the potential to become the next big social media marketing tools, right alongside Facebook and Twitter.

At SXSW, Nakazawa got acquainted with DMM.make, the Akihabara-headquartered hardware incubator also hosting eye-tracking virtual reality headset Fove and 3D-printed robotic prosthetic Exiii. She also hooked up with another DMM.make startup, Cerevo, known for its smart consumer electronics and smartphone-connected snowboard bindings. After returning from SXSW, she joined Cerevo as a product manager in April.

Take it or leave it

Though Nakazawa founded UPQ as her own company in June, the startup relies on Cerevo for engineering, design, and quality control. Cerevo also shared some of its manufacturing contacts in China, but Nakazawa says she took to Alibaba and other websites to find factories that could deliver products to her exact specifications – and on a tight timeline.

“We deal with suppliers in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Korea,” she says. “I negotiated with each factory to provide relatively small [first-run] quantities at reasonable prices. I’m a very tough negotiator.”

UPQ’s flagship offering is its A01 smartphone. It features a quad-core chipset, a 4.5-inch display, and runs stock Android 5.1 Lollipop. It’s factory unlocked and supports dual SIM cards – a rarity for phones sold in Japan.

The A01’s specs might sound underwhelming against an iPhone or the latest Galaxy, but it costs just JPY 14,500 (US$116).

“Smartphones are among the most complicated consumer electronics products, due to the variety of components,” Nakazawa says. “If you can make a smartphone, you can make just about anything.”

The unexpected way data is changing sports teams

The idea that data plays a role on sports teams isn’t new, and the number of teams relying on data and the level to which they are doing so both seem to be growing. Perhaps one of the most memorable stories (largely because it made it to the big screen) was the unlikely success of Billy Beane and the low-budget Oakland A’s.

Viscovery offers business an out-of-the-box SDK and API that lets customers scan real-life items and learn more information about them on their phones – which hopefully leads to a purchase. For example, customers in Taiwan who download an app from Taaze, one of the island’s online booksellers, can scan books they see in a store using Viscovery-powered visual search. They’ll then see Taaze’s product description, and perhaps an option to buy the title.

Viscovery also provides its clients with analytics. It monetizes by charging clients for the number of images they store in the cloud, which Viscovery powers with AWS, and by taking commissions on purchases.

Facebook Messenger for Android, iOS, and desktop now lets you send and receive money for free in the U.S.

As many believed was inevitable, Facebook has entered the personal payments space. The company today announced Facebook Messenger will now let you send and receive money.

The feature is rolling out “in the coming months” on Android, iOS, and the desktop website. Facebook is only making it available to U.S. users for now.

Facebook says payments in Messenger is “a more convenient and secure way to send or receive money between friends.” The process to send money is as follows: message a friend, tap the $ icon, enter the amount you want to send, and tap Pay in the top right.

Receiving money is of course much simpler: Open the conversation from your friend and tap Add Card in the message. If it is your first time sending or receiving money, you’ll have to add a Visa or MasterCard debit card issued by a U.S. bank to your account.

Once that is done, you can create a PIN that will be required the next time you send money. For those who want to take extra precautions, add more layers of authentication to your Facebook account and/or enable Touch ID if you have an iOS device.

Security is of paramount importance for such a feature, so here is how Facebook promises to protect payments:

Incorporating security best practices into our payments business has always been a top priority. We use secure systems that encrypt the connection between you and Facebook as well as your card information when you ask us to store it for you. We use layers of software and hardware protection that meet the highest industry standards. These payment systems are kept in a secured environment that is separate from other parts of the Facebook network and that receive additional monitoring and control. A team of anti-fraud specialists monitor for suspicious purchase activity to help keep accounts safe.

Facebook claims the money you send is transferred “right away,” but the company warns you should expect delays: “It may take one to three business days to make the money available to you depending on your bank, just as it does with other deposits.” In other words, this payment solution isn’t unique other than the fact that it’s on Facebook.

Rumors of a Facebook payment system have been circulating for years. Speculation significantly skyrocketed when the company hired PayPal president David Marcus to focus on its messaging business.

Keyword Optimization.

Your copy should be optimized for your target keywords, but it shouldn’t be overly repetitive. Don’t force your keywords into your copy – let them flow naturally and your audience will thank you for it.
No Personality
The hardest part about writing your own copy, especially blog copy, is developing a personality. I find the best way to do this is to just start writing. Write how you would talk, get a first draft done, and then as you edit and proofread you can clean up the language.

If you have a funny comment to make, make it! Always keep your writing politically correct. If you’re not sure whether someone will be offended by a particular opinion or joke, it’s best not to express it.

あなたが書く文章はターゲットとするキーワードに最適化されていなければならないが、過剰に繰り返してもいけない。キーワードを文章に無理やり入れるべきではない。自然な流れに任せておけば、読者は感謝するだろう。

個性の不足。
自分自身で文章を書くとき、特にブログの文章を書く場合に最も困難なことは、個性をもたせることだ。ベストな方法は、とにかく文章を書き始めてみることだ。自分が話すように書いてみて、最初の下書きを書きあげてみよう。それから編集と校正を行えば、言葉をきれいにまとめていくことができる。

The overarching takeaway last year was that the quality of LTE varies considerably depending on where you are in the world. In its 2015 report, not much has changed. The report says:

When it comes to the future, they 'get it', and we don't. Technically literate and intellectually elitist, Gates was and is a sign of the leaders to come. To some in Microsoft he was a mystical, almost religious figure (indeed he remains so to many, despite his departure from the business), while to others in the industry he was the Antichrist. Both views are outrageous, but underline just how powerful his influence has been. (With all the hullabaloo about alleged abuses of monopoly power, it is easy to forget that back in the 1970s, IBM, too, was the target of antitrust investigations. Yet, memory fades. Some people have come to regard Big Blue as almost saintly compared to Microsoft.
