Japanese Startup Phroni Gets Phunded, Raises 70 Million Yen

Anyone who attended our recent Startup Asia conference in Singapore earlier this month will recall Ikuya Yamada, who pitched his solution for a ‘smarter’ smartphone/tablet browsing experience called Phroni (see phroni.com). Yamada is part of Japan-based Studio Ousia, which announced today that it has received 70 million yen (about $864,000) in series A funding from Nissay Capital, a well-known Japanese VC.

今月初め、シンガポールで開催されたスタートアップアジア会議で、山田育矢がスマートフォンやタブレットでのウェブブラウジングを効率化する新技術「Phroni（フローニ）」 (詳細はphroni.comにて)を紹介したのは、出席者にとって記憶に新しいところだろう。山田は、日本を拠点とするStudio Ousiaの一員であり、Studio Ousiaは本日付けで、日本有数のベンチャーキャピタルであるニッセイ・キャピタルを割当先とする7000万円（約86万4千ドル）の第三者割当増資を実施した。

The idea behind Phroni is that it analyzes the text in your browser and coverts certain words to Wikipedia links, allowing you to explore further information without the cumbersome copy and paste steps into search bars. Users can also further explore using the toolbar across services like Twitter or YouTube (see below).

Some of you may recall that a couple of our Startup Asia judges expressed some skepticism that a solution like Phroni hadn’t been done before. I recently asked Mr. Yamada about this, and he was quick to point out that while there are many services that make keywords linkable, most of them do so in the interests of advertising:

スタートアップアジアの審査員の中には、Phroniのような解決策は以前にもあったのではないかという懐疑的な意見もあったことを覚えているだろうか。これについては、山田氏に先日聞く機会があり、キーワードをリンク可能にするサービスは多数あるものの、その多くは広告利益のためであることを、同氏はすぐに指摘した。

”As far as we know, there is currently no similar service for smartphones and tablet devices. Existing PC-based services typically focus on converting “profitable” keywords into links (such as brand names, product names, etc)… As you know, we aim to enhance the [mobile] browsing experience, and we are standing on the user side.”

同氏は以下のように述べた。「我々が知っている限り、スマートフォンやタブレットデバイス向けに展開されている類似サービスは、現時点で他にはない。従来のPC向けのサービスでは、「利益になる」キーワードをリンク変換することに主眼を置いていた（ブランド名、商品名等）。周知の通り、我々は（モバイル向け）ブラウジング体験の強化を目標としており、ユーザー側の視点に立って開発を進めている。」

He adds that this funding will be going towards hiring new engineers for the development and the global launch of Phroni. We’re delighted to see that a Startup Asia participant is one step closer to success. We certainly wish Mr. Yamada and his team all the best as they work to bring Phroni to the world, on both iOS and Android.

Facebook Mobile Hack Roadshow Coming To Singapore, Hong Kong, Seoul, Tokyo

There are quite a lot of hackathons/hacking sessions in Asia these days, particularly those organized or supported by big companies. And that’s a great thing.

The latest hack roadshow in Asia will be held independently by Facebook. The four cities to have these sessions are Singapore, Hong Kong, Seoul, and Tokyo.

Facebook’s hack roadshow will focus specifically on mobile, including topics like web app development, native app development, responsive design (this one looks insightful), and an introduction to the Facebook mobile platform.

There will also be a hands-on hacking session near the end. The best apps will win some awards, though Facebook didn’t state what exactly is to be won. You can actually bring in a half-baked mobile app and finish building it in the hacking session. One good incentive is that the Facebook developer team will be there to assist you. Tickets cost just $25 which is a pretty good deal for serious mobile app developers. The sign-up page for each city is below:

Physical: Baby is able to “rake” food from highchair tray or bowl. As the term implies, this action involves baby dragging the open fingers of one hand across a surface. This is a precursor to picking up food using the “pincer” grasp.

Cognitive: Baby can distinguish emotion by the tone of an adult’s voice. Baby begins vocalizing first sounds, which include Ba-Ba, Ma-Ma and Da-Da.

Social/Emotional: Stranger anxiety has really set in. Even close relatives such as Grandma and Grandpa, can be perceived as strangers to a baby this age.

Remember to buy baby board books and soft plastic books. Baby doesn't recognize own strength and can easily tear paper pages.

Play music. This soothes baby and helps her develop a sense of rhythm. Studies have shown that music encourages babies to move their bodies.
At mealtime, offer baby a spoon, fork and a plate with a “dipping” section. Babies love to dip food into sauces and this will help develop fine motor skills and hand/eye coordination.
Offer baby stacking cups for bath time play. Show baby how to scoop water with the cup and watch it drain out the bottom.

Vision: Baby reaches for and pats mirror image. Depth perception is fairly developed at 7 months and baby can discern shadows.

Touch: Baby is able to sit up and shake and bang toys! Baby also spends more time exploring her own self with her hands and mouth. For example, baby will put her feet in her mouth at this age.

Hearing/Communication: Baby responds to changes in her world. Loud noises, soft music, bright lights and darkened rooms all have an impact on baby.

After about 6-7 months, baby’s development rapidly expands. His senses are developed to a point where milestones change to Physical, Cognitive and Social/Emotional.

While these are developing from birth, they are really the key milestones from 6 months on out.


By seven months of age, most babies can sit up without support. This skill follows earlier "practice" when baby sat propped up with pillows, which helped develop strength and coordination necessary for sitting alone.

What You Can Do:
Baby is most likely teething at this age. Offer his favorite teethers and stock up on new ones, particularly teethers with water-filled sections.
Keep 3-4 water-filled teethers on hand; a few in the refrigerator for cooling while others may be with baby.
Consider a vibrating teether. The best vibrating teethers are activated by baby’s interaction with the teether
