Say Hi to beautiful location-based experiences

I like content presented on maps. And I’ve been a big fan of Hitotoki, developed by Craig Mod and the folks at Tokyo-based AQ, since a few years back. It was a great collection of geo-tagged stories, wrapped in the kind of beautiful design that great stories deserve. But looking back now, I think that this location-based content concept was a little ahead of its time.

I asked AQ’s Chris Palmieri about the state of Hitotoki a few months back, and I was pretty excited when he told me that it would be relaunching. After a bit of a wait, the new service is now online and is known simply as Hi, living on the web at SayHi.co [1]. Like Hitotoki, it asks you to ‘sketch’ a moment from where you are, comprised of a photo and some text. The process is optimized for smartphones, geotagging your moment as you add it. Chris notes that Hitotoki and Hi began with the same goal of a 500-word moment, but points out that “how each [one] makes that happen couldn’t be more different.”

I had a chance to take an early look at Hi, testing it out over the past few months. So far my contributions are few and far between – both in terms of time and distance – but there’s a reason for that. While Hi doesn’t ask you to be overly meticulous in composing your moments, for me, the incredible design of the site implicitly demands a certain level of reflection before publishing. It makes me want take a weekend train out of Tokyo, and not come back until I have snapped the perfect selfie with a buddist zen master, and a compose a clever photo caption – preferably in haiku form – to go along with it.

この数か月間Hiを少しでけ早く試す事ができた。今のところ、時間や距離の関係で殆ど貢献できてない。でもそれには理由がある。Hiは過度に場面状況の説明を求めてこないが、サイトのデザインがあまりにも素晴しいため、投稿するのにある程度の内容が求められているような気になってしまう。週末、電車に乗って東京から離れ、禅師と一緒に写った最高の写真が撮れるまでは帰らず、また写真に添えるうまい言葉、出来れば俳句の一句でも考えたくなってしまう。

But interestingly, the publishing flow imposes some reflection by design. After uploading a moment, other Hi users may (or may not) ask you to expand on that moment. This ’Tell me more" request is both a reward for a good contribution, and peer encouragement to take it further [2]. It’s like the applause that encourages a speaker to keep talking with confidence when he’s on stage.

It turns out that the time gap between your initial sketch and your follow up elaboration is conducive to a better published piece. Chris explains that the first step is called a ‘sketch’ for a reason:

We named the initial act of creating with Hi “sketching”, but made the sketching tool as enjoyable to use as possible, because we want people to use it over and over and over again.

But the subsequent steps in the process lets you digest, process, and maybe come up with something you didn’t think of while you were in your moment. By breaking up the process in this way, it doesn’t feel like a process at all. More like a brief instant message session, or a FourSquare check-in that others might actually care about.

It looks like we asked the factory to direct ship the products to the address noted on the order.

I called the factory and they said this address was already set up in the system with the following business name (pasted below). This particular supplier can only ship to a business address and since the original order did not have a business name for that freight forwarder, they just used the name that was already in the system. It appears to be the exact same physical address. You might check with the freight forwarder and see if they have the package and perhaps set it aside under a different account name?

Perx partners American Express to offer instant rewards on mobile

Perx’s partnership with American express will enable cardholders earn more rewards on the mobile loyalty app in addition to existing card benefits.

Perx, a Singapore based mobile loyalty app has just announced their new partnership with American Express, an American multinational financial services corporation to offer instant rewards on mobile.

The exclusive partnership is extended to all cardmembers who have a consumer credit or charge card issued in Singapore, by American Express, or an American Express-branded card issued by network partners DBS Bank Limited and United Overseas Bank Limited (“American Express Cardmembers”).

Line: We’ve Added 5 Million New Users in India Since Rolling Out TV Ads

At the start of this month we noted that NHN’s smash-hit social messaging app Line had rolled out TV adverts in India. So how’s that going? According to Line’s global strategy and marketing dude Jun Masuda, Line has “gained five million users only in three weeks” in India since the TV ad blitz began.

Jun told the WSJ Digits blog that Line’s push into India has been successful so far as it battles Whatsapp and Facebook Messenger as well as other Asian-made messaging apps like WeChat. There’s no number for total Indian users of Line so far; the well-established app surely had some users in the country before its official launch in the country on July 1.

Line – which hit 200 million registered users yesterday – has 70 percent of its users outside of Japan, Jun notes. Speaking of international expansion, he compared Line’s progress to that of WeChat and KakaoTalk by saying “I think we have been able to fare much better.”

Duets: Your Messaging App Made for Singing

We know that messaging apps are hot in Asia right now. They’re so in demand these days that we even made a list of the hottest messaging apps earlier this year. But what if instead of talking to your peers, you could sing to them instead? This is now possible on Duets app.

Duets Karaoke AppDuets is a turn-based karaoke mobile app for iPhone. I’d say it’s a more entertaining way to communicate with friends than simply chatting or sending animated emoticons. Ben Wintle of Duets points out that this isn’t some sort of music game. “It’s like a messaging app, but instead of talking, you are singing to each other.”

Why the fuss over a karaoke app?

How does it work? First, find your friends on Facebook within Duets app, choose a song from the list and sing the first verse of the song with the help of a slick karaoke-style UI. Your buddy sings the next verse. This goes on alternately to the point where the user has to buy the song to finish singing it.

When the app first launched you could only sing with friends, but now users can sing with people they don’t know within the app. You can either pick a random name from Duets’ list of users, or search by “stage names” (the app’s term for username). Ben says that when the app first came out, many users were tweeting their stage names so that strangers could start duets with them.

I tried the app myself and in no time there were already a bunch of users who invited me to sing with them. If you ask me why it’s getting so much traction among Filipino users, I’d say it’s simply because Filipinos have this cultural affinity with karaoke and singing together. We don’t miss a chance to sing along with friends at any special occasion. Even restaurants cater to this. So making this functionality available on users’ smartphones through an app is a neat idea and makes it more of a social activity.

筆者自身もアプリを使ってみたが、すぐに多くのユーザが一緒に唄おうと誘ってくれた。フィリピンのユーザの間でこんなに流行っている理由を挙げるとすれば、フィリピン人が文化的にカラオケや一緒に唄う事が単純に好きだからだろう。どんな特別な行事においても、友人同士で唄う機会が必ずあり、レストランも協力してくれる。アプリを使いユーザーのスマートフォンでこの機能が利用できることは、すばらしいアイディアだし、今後人との付き合いにおいてますます定着していくだろう。

More English songs

Duets started its beta for users in the Philippines (where the app is made) last year with only 10 Filipino songs available. As it launched worldwide, the startup also secured global licensing deals with some major song publishers to build the app’s English song library. Ben admits that the biggest challenge to date has been to keep up with all the song requests they’re getting from users.

Right now, Ben says that most of their users are in the Philippines but their fastest growing source of new users is the US.

If you call it, it will tell you the GPS location; if you text it, it can ring or turn off the motorbike. It’s also useful in the event of bike theft.

・Smart Txtbks – This awesome Filipino startup is packaging entire textbooks and learning materials straight into a SIM so that the material can be read as SMS.

・Hauraa –インドネシア政府はイスラム教関連の便利なコンテンツを予め収めたSIMカードの発行を承認した。SIMカードには、イスラムの教えを実践するための動画やガイドが収められている。
