A Bubble in the Startup World?

Is there a bubble in the startup industry? It looks like it. At least that’s according to a discussion panel at GMIC, which included Robin Chan (founder and CEO at Time Machine Ventures), Bao Fan (founder and CEO, China Renaissance) and Huoy – Ming Yeh, (managing director of Silicon Valley Bank China).

It’s the same familiar points, but worth noting. Stupid money is being invested in companies, with no revenue at most times. But few acquisitions are happening in China and Asia. Most investors can’t find the 50x returns they are looking for. And because there’s an excess of capital, more folks are coming out to build startups, raise money, and hoping to be the next Facebook, Google, or Instagram. But you see the disconnection. There’s a lot of money and startups, but very few exits in Asia. That’s how I interpret it.

That said, Bao Fan pointed out that it is a natural cycle of the mobile and internet industry. The next bubble burst and dry spell would test the companies’ true strength. It is good in that sense as the industry somehow needs that. Those who survive are likely to do well. Robin Chan specifically pointed that the gaming looks to be on the downside. He didn’t explain why, but his comment does bring some weight as he previously founded XPD which was acquired by Zynga, which eventually became Zynga China. Chan has also angel invested in Twitter, Square, and Foursquare.

‘The Sexiest’ Chinese Magazine Goes Mobile

Walking around the GMIC exhibition area, it is hard not to look at booths that have very “attractive” posters. One of the booths claims to be the first sort of sexy model magazine built on the iOS and Android platform. Many guys were enjoying the view from a distance so I thought it would be nice to step forward to learn what it was all about.

GMIC の展示エリアを歩いていて、非常に「魅力的」なポスターを掲出するブースに目を向けないようにするのは難しい。あるブースでは、iOs と Android プラットフォーム上に構築された最初のセクシーモデル雑誌だと主張していた。多くの男性が遠くからの眺めを楽しんでいたので、詳しく聞くために一歩近づいてみるのは良いことだろうと思った。

So “The Sexiest” (yes, that’s the name) is a mobile magazine that features models in sexy photoshoots. The company behind Sexiest Magazine is actually International Culture Media (that’s a direct translation), a traditional print media company in China. The move to the digital platform is new for the company. In fact, The Sexiest is its first magazine presented on mobile. A representative at the booth tells me that the app was launched eight months ago and so far has more than 300,000 downloads, which is not too bad for a first attempt. 「The Sexiest」（そう、これが雑誌名だ）は、携帯で読む雑誌で、モデルたちのセクシーな写真を取り上げます。Sexiest Magazine の背後にいる企業は実は International Culture Media（直訳の英語名）で、中国の伝統的な紙のメディア企業だ。デジタルプラットフォームへの移行は、同社にとっては新しい取り組みだ。実際、The Sexiest は同社の初のモバイル雑誌だ。ブースにいた代表者が私に語ったところでは、アプリは8か月前にローンチ、現在まで30万ダウンロード以上を記録しているらしく、初めての試みとしては悪くないだろう。チェックしたい場合は、こちら（iTunes リンク）ダウンロードできる。

So why is this interesting? Well because content is rapidly shifting to the mobile platform in China. As more mobile users (phone and tablet) increase in China, media companies, even the diehard traditional ones, have to have a mobile strategy to keep up with the trend as content consumption habits change. The bridge to that content will also play a huge role, such as with the wide range of reading application available. It’s not just Flipboard here in China but we are also seeing many other reading applications mushrooming (and being cloned) in the middle kingdom too.

それでなぜこれが興味深いのか？ つまり、中国でコンテンツが急速にモバイル環境へシフトしているからだ。中国では携帯利用者（電話及びタブレット）の伸びが拡大しており、コンテンツの消費習慣が変化してきているため、メディア企業は、頑固な伝統的な企業でさえ、トレンドにキャッチアップするためにはモバイル戦略が必須なのだ。モバイルで本が読めるアプリが各種あるなど、コンテンツへのかけ橋も大きな役割を果たすだろう。中国で、既に Flipboard が上陸しているだけでなく、読書アプリやそのコピーが急速な勢いで拡大しているのを目の当たりにしている。

On a related note, Flipboard’s CEO Mike McCue was actually on stage this morning stating that his team is “very committed to China.” I’m reminded me that social reading applications have had a history of getting blocked in China. But it should do just fine with Sina Weibo and Renren integration – but, regrettably, no Facebook.

関連情報だが、Flipboard の CEO である Mike McCue は今朝、檀上で彼のチームは「非常に中国に注力している」と述べている。中国でソーシャル読書アプリがいくつもブロックされてきた歴史を思い出した。しかし、Sina Weibo と Renren の統合チームなら問題ないだろう。残念ながら Facebook は別だ。

Executives Leaving China’s Group Buy Industry

It’s no secret that group buy is more or less in shambles in China for everyone but a few of the top players. But it seems even some of those top players aren’t immune to the industry’s problems, as analysts have pointed out what seems to be a sort of exodus of high-level management from Chinese group buy companies.

一部のトッププレイヤーを除けば、中国の共同購買がほぼ壊滅状態であることは誰の目にも明らかだ。しかし、どうやらトッププレイヤー達も業界の問題とは無縁ではいられないらしい。アナリストによると、中国の共同購買企業においてトップの経営層からの脱出が起きているようだ。

Whatever the reasons, the loss of experienced upper management probably isn’t good for China’s fledgling — and floundering — group buy industry. It’s also significant that most of these people are moving to other industries; in some cases, even industries like traditional e-commerce that compete directly with group buy for customers.

いかなる理由であっても、生まれたばかりの、そして危機に瀕している中国の共同購買業界にとって、経験のある上級経営層を失うのはおそらく良いことではないだろう。また、こうした人々の多くが別の業界へ移っているということは重大であり、顧客獲得で直接競合していた伝統的なEコマース業界へ移った例もあるようだ。

One of the biggest challenges for social enterprise incubators is funding. Unlike more transparent and easy to understand business like manufacturing, companies and venture capital firms don’t understand how to value social impact and therefore don’t know how to justify how much to give. Traditional manufacturing companies use a % of expenditure model to figure out how much money they need, but of course this can’t be applied in the same way to social enterprise start-ups. Such a challenge remains a bottle neck in really promoting social or non-profit organizations.

社会的企業のインキュベーターが経験する最大の困難の1つは、資金だ。製造業等のもっと透明で分かりやすい事業と違い、企業やベンチャーキャピタルは社会的インパクトを計る術を知らず、そのためいくら出資すればよいか正当化する方法がわからない。伝統的な製造業の会社であれば、支出の割合のモデルを使えば必要な資金は計算できた。しかし、もちろん同じ方法は社会的企業のベンチャーには適用できない。現実に社会的事業やNPOを推進するにあたっては、こうした困難がボトルネックであり続ける。

In some sense, China is undergoing the same path South Korea is. Now experiencing a period of unprecedented economic growth, many poor and marginalized people on the sidelines are being forgotten. China can learn from South Korea’s experience and balance economic growth with sustainable and equitable social welfare. More emphasis should be put on social entrepreneurship rather than start-ups that can simply raise a lot of VC funding and have a big exit.

ある意味、中国も韓国がいま来た道をたどっている。今や前代未聞の経済成長期にあり、社会の片隅に追いやられた多くの貧困層や準貧困層は忘れられている。中国は韓国の経験から学ぶことができ、経済成長と持続可能かつ公正な社会福祉との間でバランスを取ることができる。単にVCから大きな資金を得て大きくイグジットするベンチャーより、社会的企業にこそもっと充填を置くべきだろう。

South Korea, a New Social Entrepreneurship Hub of Asia

Tech start-up incubators have sprung up across the world, in a concerted effort to uncover the next Google or Facebook and make a lot of money. But in Seoul, the government is driving a big push towards funding and incubating not just tech start-ups, but also those that have a socially good element to them.

技術系のベンチャーを育てるインキュベーターは世界中で生まれており、次のGoogleやFacebookを見つけて一攫千金を得ようと揃って努力をしている。しかしソウルでは、技術系だけでなく社会に良い要素をもたらすベンチャーに対しても資金援助やインキュベーションに関して政府が大きく推進している。

On the surface, Seoul looks and feels like a great place; it’s clean, well organized, has delicious food and great nightlife, addictive KPOP and good looking people. But below the surface, like every other country, Korea does have many social problems. One of the biggest problems is very high youth unemployment, which now stands at 8.3% for people below 30 years old. High youth unemployment is a result of a cycle that is hard to stop. Many graduates without jobs, create more competition for jobs, making young people frustrated and forcing them back into education which is getting more expensive, causing more stress because they can’t afford to pay it off, plus Korea is already an expensive country to live in.

表面的には、ソウルは素晴らしい都市だ。クリーンで整然としていて、美味しい食事やナイトライフがあり、病みつきになるKPOPや美男美女がいる。しかし他の国と同様、韓国も水面下では多くの社会問題を抱えている。最も大きな問題の一つは、若年層の失業率が非常に高いことで、今や30歳未満の8.3％が失業だ。高い若年失業率は、なかなか止められないサイクルの結果だ。多くは職が決まらないまま卒業し、それが就職の競争率をさらに押し上げ、若者をイラつかせ、再度学校へと向かわせている。これが余計な費用を増やし、ストレスも増大させている。追加で支払う余裕もないし、韓国は既に暮らすには高くつく国だからだ。

This of course creates a lot of headache for the government to manage. In a creative way, the government is looking to other young people with an entrepreneurial spirit to solve these problems by establishing incubation centers. On offer are funding grants of around 30M Korean Won (USD$30K) per enterprise per year, office space and other services like mentoring and education. Social enterprises also enjoy favourable tax treatment and bank loan interest rates.

これはもちろん、政府にとっては大きな頭痛の種だ。創造的に言えば、政府はインキュベーションセンターを設立することで、これらの問題を解決してくれる起業家精神を持つ若者に注目している。提示されるのは、1社1年当り約3,000万韓国ウォン（3万米ドル相当）の資金供与、オフィススペース、面談による指導や教育などのサービスだ。また、ソーシャルビジネスを手掛ける企業は税金と金利において優遇を受ける。

Beyond solving the social problem of high youth unemployment, the South Korean government has a responsibility to undertake more social projects. One reason is because South Korea is a part of the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) group of countries and has a quota to meet for number of social enterprises created. Another reason is that once upon a time, South Korea was a poor country. But after the recent four decades of rapid economic development, and some neglect for social welfare, it is time to make up for it. In some sense it has graduated from poor to rich country and now feels the need to give back to society.

もはや高い若年失業率という社会問題を解決するというより、韓国政府はもっと多くの社会的プロジェクトを引き受ける責任がある。その理由の1つは、韓国はOECD（経済協力開発機構）加盟国の1つで、一定数の社会的起業はマストだというものである。もう1つの理由は、昔韓国は貧しい国だったが、過去40年の急速な経済成長も過ぎ、社会福祉から目をそむけたこともあり、やり直す時期に来ているというものだ。ある意味、韓国は貧しい国を卒業して豊かな国になり、今ようやく社会へ還元する必要性を感じているのだ。

Such incubators are popping up all over Korea. There are five alone in Seoul and around 21 in Korea in total.

In Seoul, I had the opportunity to visit one center called Social Enterprise Incubating Center. I chatted to Kyung Seok Yang from Social Cube, who operates the center. She explained there are three main types of social enterprises. One is those aimed at job creation, especially for South Korea’s youth. Secondly, there are those that employ people with disabilities or the elderly. Thirdly, it could be a mix of both. One example is an enterprise called WeCAN, which employs disabled people to make cookies and the profits go back to disabled people.

こうしたインキュベーターが韓国中に生まれている。ソウルだけでも5つあり、韓国全土ではおよそ21ある。

ソウルで、私は Social Enterprise Incubating Center というセンターを訪問する機会があった。同センターを運営する Social Cube の Kyung Seok Yang と話をした。彼女の説明によれば、社会的起業には大きく分けて3つの種類がある。１つは、雇用創出、特に韓国の若年層の雇用創出を狙うものだ。2つ目は、障がい者や高齢者を雇うものだ。3つ目は、前の2つの混合だ。一例を挙げると、WeCAN という企業は、クッキーを作るのに障がい者を雇い、利益は障がい者に還元している。

Another recent example is an enterprise called Cizion. Similar to Disqus, it is a social comments manager for blogs. At first I was confused how this could be a social enterprise but it became apparent. Since South Korea has such a strong entertainment industry, many people like to talk about celebrities like singers and actors. But some of this chatter is gossip and rumours which have a detrimental impact on the minds of celebrities who feel ashamed, leading some to even commit suicide. Therefore Cizion aims to filter out untrue comments, by creating a blacklist of commentors through Facebook or Twitter.

もう1つの最近の事例は、Cizion という企業だ。Disqus と同様、ブログのソーシャルコメントマネジャーである。初めは、どうやってこれが社会的な企業になりうるか分からなかったが、後に明らかになった。韓国には非常に強力な芸能界があり、多くの人が歌手や俳優といったセレブについて語りたがる。しかしこうしたおしゃべりのゴシップや噂話の中にはセレブの精神にとって有害なものもあり、それによってセレブは恥ずかしく思い、時には自殺に試みることにもなる。そのため、Cizion はFacebook や Twitter を通じてコメンテーターのブラックリストを作ることで、間違ったコメントを取り除くことを目指している。

While at the Social Enterprise Incubation center I chatted with two start-ups being incubated there currently.

The first was Life Seed, a group aiming to support baby sitters. The problem with child services in South Korea is that the quality of government support is rather low quality and there is poor monetary compensation. Baby sitters in South Korea are mainly students, social workers or elders and many are untrained in how to properly handle babies or young children.

1社目は Life Seed で、ベビーシッターの支援を目指しているグループだ。韓国の子供向けサービスの問題は、政府による支援の質がやや低く、金銭面の報酬も低いことだ。韓国のベビーシッターの多くは学生やソーシャルワーカー、或いは高齢者で、赤ちゃんや幼児の正しい扱い方に関してトレーニングを受けていない。

Therfore Life Seed wants to provide an education system, teaching sitters how to baby sit and how to manage long term stress. To also create a support structure, the enterprise wants to create an offline community that can share and learn from each other. The mission of Life Seed is to change the eco-system of child care where the government, teachers, parents and sitters can work together to improve the system. Life Seed is a four person team led by Han Kyung-Jin and Choi Eun-Joo.

そのため、Life Seed は教育システムを提供し、それによってシッターたちにどうやって子供を寝かしつけるか、どう長期的なストレスに対処するかを教えたいと考えている。また支援スキームを作るために、同社はお互いに共有したり学習したりできるオフラインコミュニティを作りたいと考えている。Life Seed の使命は、チャイルドケアのエコシステムを変え、政府や教師、親、シッターがシステムをより良くするために一緒に動けるようにすることだ。Life Seed は、Han Kyung-Jin と Choi Eun-Joo が率いる4人のチームだ。
