WeChat v5.0 Update Arrives on iOS With Social Gaming, Mobile Payments, and Sticker Store

The long awaited update to WeChat, the popular China-made messaging app, has arrived. This morning WeChat v5.0 for iOS is rolling out (to be followed by the Android iteration soon) with social gaming, mobile payments, and a proper sticker store. Plus a flatter iOS 7-style WeChat icon.

GREE pulls plug on Tellit, its competitor for WeChat, Line

Japanese mobile social gaming company GREE has decided to kill Tellit, its own attempt at a mobile chat app. Launched a year ago, the app was built by GREE-invested eBubby, an Amsterdam startup specializing in messaging apps.

Tellit is similar to the popular Asia chat apps like Line and WeChat with its cute stickers. According to TechinAsia, it had achieved number one status on the iOS App Store in Malaysia, Italy, and Germany for the free app category.

GREE’s statement mentions that the app was shut down despite seeing “steady usage” and having “loyal users” because the company is facing strong competition in other areas of business.

“In order to focus our efforts and succeed in a competitive environment, unfortunately sometimes we need to make difficult decisions.”

The company will delete user data 90 days after the service is suspended. That includes personal data, chat logs, and chat data associated with the app. Users can back up the data if they wish to do so.

- The display area is the same as the iPad Retina.
- The edges of the frame are narrower using the same style as the iPad mini.
- The ITO (Indium tin oxide) is the same as the iPad mini.
- There is now 2 connectors instead of 1.
- The connectors have been changed from FFC (Flat Flexible Cable, like the iPad 2/3/4) to FPC (Flexible Printed Circuits, like the iPhone 4/5).

Stamped on the front panel is a part number of 821-1892-02, which matches the format used by Apple on many of its iOS device components.

Apple is expected to introduce the fifth-generation iPad as soon as next month, with an updated iPad mini rumored to be following fairly soon after.

I have just contacted Parcelforce, Royal Mail (the UK delivery company) and UK Customs. The first two say that although the tracking number says the item arrived in the UK on 8th July, they have no internal record of having received the item. UK Customs also have no record of having received the item, and believe that the item may have gone missing between the transfer from Japan Post and UK Customs.

This is all very unfortunate to hear as I was looking forward to receiving the Global knife!

Are you able to report the item missing to Japan Post and send a replacement?

Hi there, if you’re reading this and are not so sure about the title, you should go on. The following infographic’s produced by the Hong Kong team at HotelClub.com, and was inspired by the tech start-up culture that is currently blossoming in Silicon Harbour.

By comparing four tech cities of China (Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and HK), the author uncovered the potential of Hong Kong in Internet population, access, and censorship. It is shown that 90% of Hong Kong citizens are online, and its neighbor Shenzhen comes the second while Shanghai unexpectedly has the least netizens (66.2%).
