Granted, it isn't necessarily a bad thing to get a double helping of Ed Harris in one sitting. This enduring 63-year-old magnetic screen presence remains the sexiest bald actor of his generation—and probably any other. And Annette Bening has lost none of her sensual allure at age 55, even as her Nikki morosely pines for Garrett, her adored spouse who recklessly drowned five years earlier while they celebrated their 30th anniversary at a Mexican resort.
At first, we feel for Nikki, especially when she discovers Garrett's body as it washes up on the beach.

D’accord, ce n’est pas nécessairement une mauvaise chose que d’avoir une double portion de Ed Harris en une fois. Cette persistante , magnétique présence de l’écran agée de 63 ans reste l’acteur chauve le plus sexy de sa génération-et probablement de n’importe quelle autre.
Et Annette Bening n’a rien perdu de son allure sensuelle à l’âge de 55 ans, même lorsque Nikki languit de façon morose pour Garrett, son époux adoré qui s’est noyé cinq ans plus tôt pendant qu’ils célébraient leur 30ème anniversaire dans und lieu de séjour méxicain.
Au début, nous ressentons pour Nikki, spécialement lorsqu’elle découvre le corps de Garett rejeté sur la plage.

"The casting director is the person who culls the actors and brings the director the best choices for the role, after which the discussion begins and ultimately the director decides–but with much advice from the casting director, whose instinct the director relies on. Cindy Tolan is my long-term casting partner. She is probably my most intimate collaborator. My dread of miscasting is why I walk around with fear in my belly for months when I am trying to cast a film. Each day I try to fight off the senseless lists of actors who “mean something” in terms of their “numbers”.

In other words, it is very hard to cast an actor or actress in a lead role who has not been in some kind of hit in Europe, because the investors want to know that even if your film flops here, it will make money over there. Naturally it makes sense that many people go to films because of the stars that are in them, but ultimately the predictions of success are just voodoo. Star vehicles can fail; unknown actors can rise to stardom overnight. That is in part what’s thrilling about casting."

In anderen Worten, es ist sehr schwer ein Schauspieler oder eine Schauspielerin für eine Hauptrolle zu besetzen, der/ die nicht irgendein Star in Europa war, weil die Inverstoren wissen wollen, dass wenn euer Film hier floppen sollte, er da drüben Geld einbringen wird.
Natürlich macht es Sinn dass viele Leute in Filme reingehen aufgrund der Stars die mitspielen, aber letztendlich sind die Erfolgsprognosen nur Humbug.
Popstars können versagen, unbekannte Schauspieler können über Nacht zu Ruhm gelangen. Das ist zum Teil das Spannende am Casting.

A second act plot twist of sorts doesn’t just accelerate the dramatic momentum; it forces the characters to confront the uglier sides of themselves. Every now and then, Koreeda will overplay his representations a little bit; there’s a scene in which Ono’s character contemplates an escape from the torment of potentially trading the son she loves for a child she doesn’t know, biology or not; this takes place on a train, and as her thoughts grow darker, the shadows of the station that the train is pulling into throw her and the child actor into literal darkness.

Le déroulement de l’intrigue du second acte ne fait pas seulement accélérer l’élan dramatique; il force les personnages á confronter les plus odieuses faces d’eux- mêmes.
De temps en temps, Koreeda va éxagérer un petit peu sa représentation; il y a uns scène dans laquelle le personnage de Ono envisage une fuite au tourment d’échanger potentiellement le fils qu’elle aime pour un enfant qu’elle ne connait pas, biologie ou non; cela se déroule dans un train, et alors que ses pensées s’assombrissent, les ombres de la sation oú le train entre en gare la jette elle et l’enfant acteur dans une obscurité littérale.

It’s a well-orchestrated effect that hinges on obvious. On the other hand, I suspect the only reason it stands out is because most of the movie is so subtle and straightforward. While I’m not a parent myself, I can see how "Like Father, Like Son" would be a tough sit for any parent. Tough, but extremely worthwhile.

C’est un effet bien orchestré qui repose sur l’évidence. D’un autre coté, je suspecte que sa seule raison de se démarquer est parce que la plupart du film est si subtile et franche.
Bien que je ne sois pas parent moi-même, je peux voir comment “Tel père, tel fils” pourrait etre une dure assise pour n’importe quel parent.
Dure, mais extrêmement digne d’intérêt.

Any understanding of who Morgan is, any specificity of her character, is lost in that sloppy and opportunistic costuming choice.
Morgan and Robert begin a tentative romance, where all they do is talk about what a "real man" is like, and what a "real woman" needs. They discuss the meaning of the word "soul mate" with no irony. Morgan asks Robert if he is "a man of God", clearly important to her, and she tells him that she thinks woman's real role is to be her man's "helpmeet". Never mind that she has the gumption and smarts and bravery to go to law school, work as an attorney in a cutthroat business, and then actually set up shop for herself.

Le choix négligé de vêtements de Morgan laisse disparaitre toute specifité de son caractère et toute possibilité de reconnaitre son vrai personnage.
Morgan et Robert commencent une romance provisoire, oû ils ne parlent que de ce que définit un “vrai homme”, des besoins d’une “ vraie femme”.
Ils discutent le sens du mot „âme soeur“sans ironie.
Morgan demande à Robert si il est un „homme de dieu“, un fait clairement important à ses yeux, et elle lui dit penser que le vrai rôle des femmes est d’être la compagne de leurs maris.
Tant pis qu’elle aie la jugeote et l‘intelligence et le courage de faire ses études de droits, de travailler comme avocate dans un métier fardé et de se mettre en fait à son propre compte.
