More social apps, less texting – Philippine data usage on Christmas surges 173%

Philippine telco Globe Telecom has reported a 173 percent year-on-year increase in its subscribers’ data usage this past Christmas Day.

According to Newsbytes, this figure includes internet access on mobile phones, tablets and computers. Meanwhile, voice and SMS stalled – the former saw a 15 percent increase from last year, while the latter rose just one percent.

Whereas the Philippines was once known as the texting capital of the world, now SMS use is declining. This trend was first observed by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) in the latter part of 2012.

Why the high uptake in data this year? Globe chief technical adviser Robert Tan points to the increasing number of new ways for people to communicate with family and friends. He tells Newsbytes:

There has been a notable change in customers’ behavior in sending holiday greetings as they now turn to their smartphones, tablets and computers to send Christmas greetings through online applications such as Facebook, Twitter and other messaging applications.

Christmas or not, it’s indeed a sign that communication habits among Filipinos are changing with the spread of smartphones and social apps. Globe’s competitor Smart Communications seems to have recognized this, as it launched PowerApp last month, which allows subscribers access different social networking sites through a single app.

In a notice on the city’s website, Valenzuela City information officer Ahna Mejia says the system is part of a local program to simplify tax payments. It is said to be the first time for a municipality to do this in the Philippines. Perhaps it will kickstart other local authorities to modernize. Once more cities offer this, the more efficient the country becomes. Also, who knows, it might help increase usage of online payment in the Philippines for e-commerce as well.

Join app wants to help you find and connect with old schoolmates

While Indonesians love to connect and socialize with friends on social networking sites and apps, there hasn’t been an app catered specifically towards connecting with old schoolmates. Well there is one now in the form of an Android app called Join Alumni & School Friends – or Join for short.

Join app’s mechanics are simple. Users just need to register via either Facebook or the traditional sign-up. Then they need to choose which schools they went to – from elementary to university – as well as the years attended. The app will then automatically put that person in the corresponding group where he or she can find other long-lost schoolmates who also signed up for Join app.

When there’s at least five members in a corresponding group, they will be able to make and share posts just like on a Facebook wall. Furthermore, users can post events as well as chat with other users in the group.

Right now the app is still quite empty. None of my former school classmates are on it. Join app can help find alumni networks on your Facebook and add them onto your new network inside the app, but that’s after they accept the invitation and register inside the app too.
