Commercial potential

Kos sees this technology as having a variety of applications. First, he says Theia can take on the printing industry, offering ads and posters that can be placed in mid-air and manipulated by consumers in a variety of ways. Then there’s projection, where Kos thinks Theia will be able to offer an effect similar to Princess Leia’s “Help me, Obi-wan Kenobi” message in Star Wars. Further down the line, Kos also thinks Theia could impact the phone and tablet market, by producing something like “a cover that will generate a 3D image.”

Theia already has a viable prototype of its product, and plans to have a commercially viable offering before the end of the year. The company will start, Kos says, by demoing using 3D images of famous figures like Iron Man, Princess Leia, Princess Elsa from Frozen, or Hatsune Miku.

Theia is currently self-funded, though Kos says recently it has generated a bit of interest from venture capitalists and hopes to raise a seed round in the first quarter of next year. Part of the difficulty so far, he says, is that “Taiwan’s VCs are comparatively conservative,” with few interested in early stage investment. As a result, Theia has been talking mostly to potential investors from abroad.

Stumbling blocks

Theia’s product looks very cool, but of course the company does face challenges. In addition its comparative lack of funding, there are likely to be some major competitors in the long run. Everyone from Google to Elon Musk is working on gesture-based tech, and a lot of the big players are working on 3D/augmented reality tech too.

We’ve already seen 3D holograms do everything from perform on stage to sell cookies in supermarkets. None of these have really been interactive in the way Theia’s Air Touch is meant to be, but there are certainly other companies working on that sort of thing.

Also, it’s probably worth pointing out that for a tech company focused on creating a new method of visual presentation, Theia’s website is pretty embarrassing. Granted, the company has a small team that’s focused on other things, but it’s genuinely the worst-looking startup website I’ve seen in quite a while. If I were a prospective Theia client, that website would make me wonder about the company’s product quality.

Still, there’s no denying that what Theia is working on is pretty cool. If the company can manage to achieve its lofty aims, then it might have a real chance at beating some of the bigger tech players into the interactive holographic ad market.

Theia was a finalist in Seedstars Taipei, which was held on July 18. Seedstars Taipei was the latest round of the Asian chapter of Seedstars World, the global seed ­stage startup competition for emerging markets and fast­ growing startup scenes, now present in 52 countries.

The regional winner, Smart X Lab, was selected as the best startup in Taipei. The prize includes a flight and an all inclusive week in Switzerland in March 2016, where Smart X Lab will pitch their idea with all the other winners from around to world, to compete for the US$500,000 equity prize.

For example, a buyer wants to buy a $25 coffee grinder fulfilled by Amazon. Previously the buyer would have needed to find another Amazon-fulfilled item for at least $10 in order to qualify for free shipping on the entire order. The other reason this is notable is simply because Airbnb is now huge — it’s the third most valuable venture capital-backed startup in the world, with a $25.5 billion valuation. Uber currently claims the top spot with a more-than $50 billion valuation. Airbnb claims 1.5 million listings in more than 34,000 cities across 190 countries. Outside the U.S., Paris is a particularly strong market for Airbnb.

One aspect of the report that may raise eyebrows is that the numbers are said to have come from anonymous investors in the company, who would certainly benefit from positive sentiment around its current and future performance. As a release on the deal makes clear, Ant Financial made its initial investment in Paytm in February this year, while Alibaba is coming on board as a new investor. For those who don’t know, Ant Financial is an online payments provider and subsidiary of Alibaba Group Holdings. Paytm says it recently crossed 100 million ewallet users, who carry out over 75 million transactions each month. These are huge numbers.

Evernote lays off 47 people and closes 3 offices in effort to build a more focused team

Evernote has announced layoffs at the productivity app provider. In a post, newly installed chief executive Chris O’Neill said that today it parted ways with 47 people on its staff and shuttered three offices outside the U.S. as a means of building a smaller, more focused team.

Getting More Than I Expected

In the case of Cie Games, we had a limited window of opportunity to take a Facebook game to market. External funding was the only way to make our Car Town game, a reality.

While there was an immediate goal that justified VC funding, the transition from a bootstrapped to VC-funded proved significantly more life-changing than I could have ever anticipated. Invaluable lessons transformed my entire view of how to start, manage, and operate businesses. These learnings extended well beyond the boardroom.

Here are three lessons that became instrumental to surviving the harsh but extremely rewarding experience of being an entrepreneur. While everyone’s individual experience varies, these pieces of advice will help accelerate your growth into a more mature, seasoned leader.

1. Time, Not Cash, Is King

When Cie Games received its first round of external funding with Signia Venture Partners, all of a sudden cash wasn’t our most limited resource, time was. We had six months to launch our first product and we wanted to be first to market with a car-themed social game.

This turned on a lightbulb for me—growing startups wasn’t about investing cash, it was about investing time. For entrepreneurs, a consistent, growing stream of stakeholders–board members, employees, clients–constantly pulls their attention in different directions. Should we do this or that marketing activity? What features should we build and in what order? Which challenge or opportunity should we focus on? These questions can be overwhelming, and the sheer volume of decisions that have to be made can be tiring or even paralyzing

Shifting one’s frame of mind to time as an investment can significantly add clarity to an entrepreneur’s decision making. Time is like cash, and making decisions is like selecting investments. Each has different potential returns and risks, where the goal is to increase the odds of greatest return and to reduce the greatest risks.

To maximize your ROI on time, you must ask three questions with any decision, large or small: What are the upsides? What are the downsides? And, what are the odds of each? With proactive, mindful practice, you’ll gain the ability to quickly translate and weigh information to suss out where you should be investing your time and your company’s time.

2. Raising Capital Is Only Half the Value from Venture

During our bootstrapped days, I averaged two new contacts per month to grow Cie’s business. After Cie Game’ first raise, that increased to two to three new contacts per day. I learned that funding isn’t just about tapping into capital, it’s also about tapping into connections. The right VCs give entrepreneurs a vast network to grow an idea into a company.
