祭りが始まったのは、江戸時代後期と伝えられている。神輿に女性がさわるとご祭神のご利益で安産や子宝に恵まれるといわれているため、神輿が御旅所に到着したときと神社本殿に戻ってきたとき、参拝に来られた女性が神輿の周りに殺到することから安産祭りといわれるようになった。

山中諏訪神社は別名を山中明神（やまなかみょうじん）といい、地元ではお明神様（おみょうじんさま）と呼ばれている。ご祭神は豊玉姫命。隣接して山中浅間神社（祭神　木花開耶姫命、天津彦火々瓊々杵尊、 大山祇命）　がある。
