All my life I've been registering scores like that, so that I always feel that I'm highly intelligent, and I expect other people to think so, too. Actually, though, don't such scores simply mean that I am very good at answering a particular type of academic question - questions that are considered important by the people who make up the intelligence test - people who are intellectuals, just like me?

私は今までずっとそんなふうに点数を記録してきた。いつだって自分がとても賢いと感じていられるようにだ。そして、周りの人たちにも同じように感じてもらえるものと思ってきた。でも、実際には、こういう点数が示すのは、ある定型にはまった学問的な問いに私がとても上手に答えられるということだけだ。つまり、その知能テストを作成した人たち、私のような（？）知識人が重要だと考えた質問にである。
