Cultural backgound, emotional state, relationaship to the other people, the activity being performed, and gender; all play a part. If, for example, we imagine personal space as a bubble around a person, we could easily see these cultural differences. People in northern Europe need larger bubbles than southern Europeans; people in the United States need larger bubbles than people in the Middle East or in many Asian countries.
