We wipe all expressiveness from our faces, letting them go blank, and we reduce body movements to a minimum. Packed together like sardines in a tin, we stand quite wtill, sending out as few social signals as possible. Even when the crowding is less severe, we still try to cut down physical contact and other social interations if there are large numbers of people around us. How people view and use their personal space depends on a variety of things.
