ブラウンは直線目盛り機を用いて、当時としてはまったく信じ られないような０．００１インチロ盛りのスケールやノギスの生産を始めた。１８５１年のことである。
ノギスのアイデアはすでにヨーロッパにあったともいわれるが、加工できる機械がな いために実用化には至らなかった。
ブラウンは高精度ノギスの実現に非常な誇りを持っていた。
精密測定器の革命といわれ、機械工業製品の精度向上、「互換式生産方式」の発達に大きく貢献した。しかし最初の年にはわずか四台しか売れるなかったという。
Brown started the production of Vernier calipers and 0.001inch divisions scale which was totally unbelievable at that time, by using straight line dividing machine. It was 1851.
The idea of Vernier calipers was said to have existed already in Europe, but it did not lead to practical use since there were not machine which could process it.
Brown was very proud to realize high precision Vernier calipers.
It was called a revolution of precision measuring instrument and it contributed a lot for the development of improving precision of manufactured industrial products and "compatible manufacturing methods". However, only 4 of them was sold in its first year.
