高度成長時代前期における家庭エネルギー消費の増加率は大きくはなかった。それまでの主要エネルギーであった木質エネルギーと石炭を利用する機器の熱効率と、それに置き換わった電力、ガス、石油をエネルギー源とする機器との熱効率との間には大きな差があった。よって有効エネルギーの観点からはエネルギー消費の増大があったが、物量ベースのエネルギー消費量はそれほど増えなかった。旧来のエネルギー源は１９５３年において全エネルギー消費量の８０％以上を占めていたが、１９７１年には１０％以下となった。

During the early days of the high-growth period, the rate of increase of household energy consumption was not major. There was not a big difference between the thermal efficiency of equipment that used the principal energy sources of that time, such as wood or coal, and equipment that used electricity, gas, or oil as energy sources. Because of that, there may have been an increase of energy consumption in terms of available energy, the amount of base energy consumption has not increased that much. In 1953, energy consumption from traditional sources made up over 80% of total energy consumption, by 1971 it only made up 10%.
