As much as 98.3% of the Japan coal production was categorized as bituminous coal, which was difficult to use for household furnaces or stoves. Regarding the cost per heating value, the coal price in urban areas was approximately 50% of firewood, and 30% of charcoal, thus coal was economical. However, coal was difficult to use in a kitchen due to the problems of smokes and quality of fire, and a large stove with a chimney was necessary to use coal for indoor heating, therefore except in Hokkaido, coal was not used for household heating. For these reasons, in a Japanese household, coal was mostly used at a bath.
