　工業製品の意匠性の重要度は増加している．デザインに用いられる曲面はスタイルの良さと品質の高さの両方が要求される．これらを満たすデザインは試行錯誤を経てデザイナにより生成される．だが，これは非効率である．また，これはデザイナ各々の感覚への依存度が高い．そこで，曲面形状を幾何学的に保持し，「美しさ」を定量評価できるようになればデザイナを支援することができる．なぜなら，客観的な評価によりデザインの効率が上がるし，評価値はデザイナのコミュニケーションツールにもなるからだ．

Importance of design in industrial products is increasing. A curved surface applied to a design requires both good proportion and high quality. Designs which fulfill these requirements are produced by designers through trial and error. However, it is inefficient. It also highly depends on each designer’s sense. Therefore, it would be helpful for designers if it is allowed to keep a curved surface geometrically and evaluate ”aesthetics” at a fixed standard.
This is because objective assessments would increase efficiency of designing and evaluation value would also be a communication tool for designers.
