Prudential Financial said that it would put $500 million into a buyout fund controlled by the Chinese conglomerate Fosun Group.
The announcement comes as China gradually opens the door to private equity deals by foreign companies. The city of Shanghai said on Wednesday that it would test a program allowing such investors to convert their funds into local currency.
Buyout specialists are eager to cash in on the fast-growing market — the Carlyle Group and the Blackstone Group both announced ventures in China last year.
Fosun already has a partnership with Carlyle, and is contributing $100 million of its own to the fund that Prudential has decided to back as a limited partner.
