彼は厳しい人ですが、本当はとても優しい性格の持ち主です。例えば、3話や4話では千鶴のことを思って行動する場面など見れば、優しい性格であることが分かると思います。
また、8話では規則を破った永倉と揉めますが、その時の土方の言葉などからも永倉や新撰組みんなのことを思っていることが伝わります。
