Costa Rica has one of the more effective health services in the developing world. The fact that the country has no military forces and therefore no defence budget allows it to invest more money than is usual in Latin
America in social security and health services. Nevertheless demand for private healthcare has continued to rise as deficiencies in the state service encourage more people to look to the private healthcare sector
and to take out insurance to cover the costs. Most of this is on a group basis. In 2006 private spending contributed 23.9% of total health spending.
The social security fund, CCSS ,is financed mainly by compulsory contributions from employers and their workers.
