2003年に、新潟県の越後妻有と呼ばれる地方で三年に一度行われている「大地の芸術祭」に行ったときに、こいつはえらいもんを作ったなぁと思ったのが光の館だった。

その同時期、谷崎潤一郎の「陰影礼賛」を読んで蛍光灯にひどく嫌悪感を感じていたり、日本の近代文化に関する光と闇の興亡にひどく敏感になっている時だったから、余計心に残るものが大きかったのかもしれない。

James Turrell's "House of Light"

When I visited 'The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial' in 2003, which was held in each three years, I felt that he had created something great. That was a house of light.

At that time, I had a strong sense of dislike to a fluorescent light after reading "In Praise of Shadows" by Junichiro TANIZAKI. I was also too sensitive to a rise and fall of light and darkness concerning the Japanese modern culture. They might be the reasons for which I rememberd his work even more clearly.
