These movements are gaining popularity as people discover that the best-tasting food is fresh, seasonal, and grown nearby. In 2005, the phrase "100-MILE Diet" was coined to describe a one-year experiment by two Canadians in Vancouver who attempted to eat food grown or produced within 100 miles of their home. In 2001, Japan's food miles totaled 900 billion ton-kilometers, which was five times greater than the UK and nine times greater than France.
