In this experiment, the monkey is first presented with the spatial cue which is a goal for reach motion, second the rule "direct (direction of spatial cue)" or "inferred (oppsite direction to the spatial cue)", before generating its reach motion. At this point, The monkey's PPC neuron population represents potential actions corresponding to each of the two rules, i.e. direct and inferred, concurrently, even though it was presented with a single goal.
