A 2500 g chinese girl was born at 40 weeks gestation by vaginal delivery. Her older sister had suffered from thyroid carcinoma treated by radiotherapy at 18 years old and had improved. Other family members had no remarkable medical history including diabetes mellitus and autoimmune disorders. At 13 years old, she suffered from anorexia, strong thirst, polyuria and loss of body weight. A diagnosis of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) was given to her on the basis of glycosuria, hyperglycemia, low levels of blood and urine C-peptide and the presence of serum antibodies against glutamic acid decarboxylase (Table). She had needed about 30 to 60 units of insulin injection per day.
