Relative to its stock market valuation, Microsoft has always been a comparatively small company. Internally, too, the company has constantly split into smaller units to maintain an entrepreneurial environment. At times, change was so rapid that Microsoft seemed to be creating new divisions on an almost weekly basis. Gates also relied on maintaining a simple structure to enable him to keep his grip on the company.
