Imagine carefully tended lawns surrounding wooded areas, and low-slung buildings with grey-white facing and mirrored windows nestling in-between. The original buildings were designed in the shape of an X to maximize the natural light inside. Unlike the open-¬plan buildings popular elsewhere in the corporate world, each office was fully enclosed with a door, and intended for one occupant.
This was a deliberate attempt to create the sort of solitude and privacy Gates felt was necessary to allow his employees to 'sit and think' as he said he wanted them to.
To ensure social interaction, the campus also included numerous cafeterias which provided food at prices subsidized by the company.

これは、ゲイツの考えにより、社員が「座って考える」のに必要な静けさとプライバシーがある環境を故意的に作るためだった。社員間の交流を活性化させるためにキャンパス内にはいくつものカフェテリアが設置され、会社の助成により低価格で食事が提供された。
