R&D FOREVER
Coming from the technical side, Bill Gates understood the importance of investing in research. He invested an extraordinarily high percentage of Microsoft's revenues in research and development. So much so that in 1984, Forbes magazine, which compiles an annual list of the richest people in the world, observed that Gates would never appear in its annual review of America's richest people, because, it said, he poured so much money into R&D. (As it turned out Gates was ranked #1 in the Forbes rich list for 13 straight years, before temporarily relinquishing his title to buddy Warren Buffet for 2008, only to regain his title of world's richest man in 2009.)
