Alibaba Announces Real-Name Requirement for All China Users
Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba announced last week that all of its China users must register using a legitimate government ID number before September 23rd if they wish to continue using the service. In an announcement on its own site, the company defined the change as a move to improve trustworthiness and accuracy as well as for combating fraud.

中国のeコマース最大手のアリババが先週、同社の中国の全てのユーザーはサービスの利用を継続したければ9月23日までに正規の政府IDを使って登録しなければならない、と発表した。このサイトでの発表の中で、同社はこの変更を、信頼性と正確性の向上及び不正対策のためだと定義している。
Users who fail to register with their real identities by this Thursday will find themselves unable to post new products or update any of their product information. If they still haven’t fallen in step by 2012, they will find their accounts taken down completely. For the moment, these changes apply to all Chinese users on Alibaba’s China marketplace; international users don’t yet need to register with official IDs.
When approached for comment about the changes, Jasper Chan, Senior Manager and Head of Asia Pacific International Corporate Affairs for Alibaba, told us:
この木曜日までに本名で登録しなかったユーザーは、新しく製品を投稿したり自分の製品情報を更新できなくなる。そしてさらに2012年までにこの手続きを行わないと、アカウントが完全停止されることになる。今のところ、これらの変更はアリババの中国マーケットプレイスの中国人ユーザーにのみ適用される；中国国外のユーザーはまだ正規IDで登録する必要はない。

"We are dedicated to enhancing the quality of information on our e-commerce platforms. This new policy launched on our China marketplace will help further enhance the trustworthiness of our members, further boosting the quality of suppliers, ultimately this will enhance the online experiences of buyers and sellers on our platform."
It seems to be all a part of Alibaba’s new push for security, which even extends to on-site checks of Alibaba ‘gold supplier’ factories – a huge task which will begin next month. The audits will be mandatory, and will examine the production prowess of the suppliers in relation to what they state in their Alibaba profiles.

While real-name systems have met with resistance elsewhere, where there are concerns they might be used to limit speech, the benefits of using a real-name system to combat fraud in e-commerce transactions is pretty obvious, so long as Alibaba is careful to keep users data safe — and careful to track down users who will inevitably attempt to register using faked, stolen, or purchased ID numbers.
本名登録システムは、発言を制限しなければならなくなるという懸念から他のところでも反対意見に会ってきた。しかしアリババがユーザーのデータを慎重に扱い続け、偽のID、盗難されたID、あるいは売買されたIDを使って登録しようとするユーザーを見つけ出して追跡し続ける限りにおいては、eコマースでの詐欺とたたかうために本名システムを採用する利点は、非常に明快である。
