年に一度、年間でもっとも優秀なミュージックビデオを決定し表彰する音楽アワードで、多岐の部門にわたるノミネーションは、「映像作品としてのクオリティ、インパクト、斬新さ、楽曲とのマッチング」、「楽曲自体のクオリティ」、「アーティスト自身の魅力／パワー」の3点を重視し、アーティスティックな側面だけでなく、テクニカルな観点からなど、さまざまな角度から選考を重ね、決定されます。
