Bitcoin transaction service Coinbase enters Asia via Singapore
As a way of celebrating the launch, Coinbase will waive retail conversion fees for Singaporeans through September 9
Popular Bitcoin wallet and exchange service Coinbase has entered the Asian market for the first time today and expanded its global payment service to Singapore.
Singaporeans can now buy and sell Bitcoin investments via online local banking transfers.
“Singapore is one of those financial capitals of the world that is really exciting for us. We actually looked into a few [financial capitals], and I hope we will be able to launch in all of them eventually,” said Brian Armstrong, Founder and CEO of Coinbase.

人気のBitcoin財布および両替サービスCoinbaseは、今日、アジアに初進出し、その世界的な支払サービスをシンガポールにまで広げた。
今やシンガポール人は、Bitcoin投資を地元のオンライン銀行間振替を介して、Bitcoin投資を売買できるようになった。

Armstrong explained the process: When Coinbase invests in a new country, it follows a playbook and looks for important features — such as finding a local payment method that is usable for the average person. Additionally, it is important to lock-down the regulatory environment and work with the local legal council. Depending on the country, a translation component may be required.
Armstrong氏がプロセスを説明してくれた。「Coinbaseが新たな国に投資する際、戦略に従い、重要な機能を探します。世間一般の人が利用する、その地域での支払方法を探すなどです。さらに、規制環境を整理して、その地域の地方自治体と協働するのが大切です。その国によっては、翻訳成分も必要かもしれない。
“A lot of times when you are working on expanding into new countries, it isn’t dictated by where you want to launch first, it is actually where you can find good partners [as well as] the local regulatory environment. So often times, it is not so much the order that we would choose to launch in, it is the order when we could get those boxes checked,” Armstrong added.
The numbers game
Today continued the aggressive expansion push by Coinbase in 2015.
The payments platform began the year with presence in 19 countries and the move into Singapore has brought the current total to 28. Armstrong said that the company hopes to be in 40 countries by the end of the year.

2015年現在、Coinbaseの積極的な拡大の波は続いている。
Coinbaseは2015年の初めには19ヶ国に進出していたが、シンガポールへの展開を含めると現在合計で28ヶ国にまでのぼる。彼によると、年の終わりまでには40ヶ国にまで伸ばすとされている。
In January, Coinbase raised a US$75 million Series C round from NYSE, BBVA, USAA, Andreessen Horowitz, DFJ Growth, Union Square Ventures and Ribbit Capital. So far, the startup has raised a total of US$106 million in VC funding.
Armstrong told e27 that the international expansion was a result of the Series C funding.
“When we raised that round, we did it telling our investors that we wanted to go build this financial infrastructure around the world and we wanted to be the first company to do it… Why? Bitcoin has a ton of potential, but there are a couple of foundational pieces that need to be there before we can realise its full potential,” he said.

But Armstrong insisted that the move to Singapore is not part of a concerted ‘Asia push’ and Coinbase will grow into different countries from a variety of regions. For instance, it was just launched in Canada on August 31.
Moving forward, the company hopes it can make on-ramp, off-ramp solutions to create an application programming interface (API) that developers can use to build products. Armstrong compared the plan to being a financial services version of Amazon Web Services.

Additionally, Armstrong said he is excited about the popularity of the Coinbase wallet, especially because people may be trending towards using the service in developing countries.
