A belief in universal negative outcomes from early childbearing
certainly contributes to discomfort experienced by
health care providers in working with young mothers.
Social outcomes are influenced by many factors other than
maternal age alone, and the relationships are complex.
Pregnant and parenting young women experience tremendous
social stigma, with probable negative effects on their
health and well-being. Although precursors to early childbearing
(e.g., poverty and poor educational achievement)
can be difficult to address in the clinical setting, as health
care providers we can at least avoid contributing to the
stigmatization of these young women.
