東方神起（とうほうしんき）" とは" 東方の神が起きる！ " という意味で、アジア全域から世界にその名を広げられるグループとして名付けられた。
東方神起のメンバーYUNHO、CHANGMIN、JEJUNG、JUNSU、YUCHUN の5 人は、2004 年2 月に韓国でデビューすると同時に、一躍10 代コーラスグループとして絶大な支持を受ける。
TOHOSHINKI means "God of the east will wake up!". The group was named TOHOSHINKI to spread the name in the world from Asia.
Five members of TOHOSHINKI, YUNHO, CHANGMIN, JEJUNG, JUNSU and YUCHUN made their debut in South Korea in Feb 2004. Soon after that, they got tremendous support as a chorus group of teens.
韓国での活動だけにとどまらず、日本においてもJ-POP の一新人として、2005 年4 月にデビュー。
日本語で歌う彼らも、徐々に人気を獲得し、2007 年には、チケット争奪となった全国ホールツアー「TOHOSHINKI 2nd LIVE TOUR 2007 ～ FIVE IN THE BLACK ～」を開催。
In addition to being active not only in South Korea, they made their debut in Japan in Apr 2005 as a new face of J-POP.
They sing songs in Japanese and gradually gain popularity. In 2007, they held a hall tour in Japan, "TOHOSHINKI 2nd LIVE TOUR 2007 ~FIVE IN THE BLACK~", whose tickets were sold out instantly.
あまりの盛況ぶりに、追加公演として、日本武道館2DAYS を追加し、それもまた即完売させる。
2008 年前半には初の全国アリーナツアー「TOHOSHINKI 3rd LIVE TOUR 2008 ～ T ～」を敢行。
彼らのパフォーマンスの高さは、幅広く評価され、全国約15 万人の観客を動員しての大規模なライブツアーも大成功に収めている。
Since the tour was so flourishing that they held addditional performances for two days in Nippon Budokan, whose tickets were also sold out instantly.
In the first half of 2008, they held their first Japan arena tour "TOHOSHINKI 3rd LIVE TOUR 2008 ~T~".
Their performance of high quality received wide acclaim. They also succeeded in a large-scale live tour mobilizing about 150,000 people all over Japan.
2007 年に、積極的なリリースを続け、2008 年の年明けにリリースしたSG「Purple Line」で、初のオリコンシングルチャート1 位を獲得。
同年4 月リリースSG「Beautiful you/ 千年恋歌」、7 月リリースSG「どうして君を好きになってしまったんだろう？」、10 月リリース「呪文-MIROTIC-」が4 作連続でオリコンチャート1 位を獲得し、外国人アーティストとしてオリコンシングルウィークリーランキング連続1 位の最高記録を更新した。
In 2007, they continued releasing actively and their single "Purple Line", released in the beginning of 2008 got their first Top 1 in Oricon single chart.
"Beautigul you/ Sennen Koiuta (Millenium Love Song)" released in Apr, "Doshite kimio sukininatte shimattandaro? (Why did I fall in love with you?" released in Jul and "Jumon (Spell) -MIROTIC-" released in Oct of the same year got Top 1 in Oricon single chart in series. As a foreign artist, they renewed the record of serial Top 1 in Oricon single weekly ranking.
2008 年には、オリコンシングルウィークリーランキング1 位を獲得した回数も全アーティスト中1位（2008 年11 月1 日時点）と、J-POP シーンにその名を轟かせる存在となる。
その圧倒的な人気は日本・韓国だけにとどまらず、中国、台湾、タイ、マレーシア等の アジアの各地域でもその名を轟かせており、2006 年、2007 年でのアジアツアーを成功させるまでに至っている。
In 2008 they got Top 1 in Oricon single weekly ranking most times of all the artists (at the time of Nov 1 2008) and their name got a fame in J-POP scene.
They have gained the overwhelming popularity not only in Japan and South Korea but also in Asian countries such as China, Taiwan, Thailand, and Malaysia. They have succeeded in their Asia Tour in 2006 and 2007.
2008 年末、初となる日本レコード大賞ノミネート（優秀作品賞受賞）とNHK 紅白歌合戦出場を果たし、その余勢を駆って翌2009 年3 月にアルバム『The Secret Code』は、初めて日本レコード協会から「プラチナ」の認定を受ける大ヒットとなった。
同年7 月、デビュー以来の目標であった東京ドーム公演を成功。
Receiving their first Japan Record Awards nomination (Best Song) and making an appearance at the NHK Kouhaku Uta Gassen at the end of 2008, the momentum didn't let up with the big hit album "The Secret Code" becoming their first to receive "platinum" status in March 2009 by the Recording Industry Association of Japan.
In July of the same year, they successfully had a performance at the Tokyo Dome, a goal set since their debut.
また、日本での活動の合間を縫って、2009 年2 月からソウル、タイ、中国を巡回するアジアツアーを展開する中、2008 年末にはJEJUNG 初主演映画の撮影を行い、翌2009 年7 月にはYUNHO やCHANGMIN もテレビドラマへの主演等、今まで行っていなかったソロ活動も行っていた。
Between their schedule in Japan, they had been making their Asia tour since Feb 2009, visiting Seoul, Thailand and China. At the end of 2008, JEJUNG did a movie as a leading actor for the first time. In July 2009, YUNHO and CHANGMIN also started solo work that they had never done, such as leading actors in TV dramas.
2010 年4 月グループ活動が休止。
約1 年ぶりの長い休止を経て、2010 年11 月末、音楽活動を自制していたYUNHO とCHANGMIN により、当面の間2 人による東方神起の再活動が発表された。
アジア全域で待ち望まれていた再始動！
2011 年1 月26 日にリリースした「Why? (Keep Your Head Down)」はオリコン・着うたランキングとも断トツの１位を獲得し、変わらずの人気を実証した。
In Apr 2010 they stopped their group activity.
At the end of Nov 2010, after one year's long pause, it was announced that YUNHO and CHANGMIN, who had restrained themselves in music activity, would restart TOHOSHINKI. For the time being, its activity would be done by two.
Their restart had been waited for in the whole Asia!
"Why?(Keep Your Head Down)", released on Jan 26, 2011, ranked as the number-one choice across both Oricon and Chaku-uta rankings. This proved that they are still popular.
