平安時代の作品とされ、国宝です。
背中には後光を表す板光背（いたこうはい）には唐草文様などが極彩色で描かれています。
また、水の流れの様に軽やかな衣の衣紋は漣波式（れんばしき）と呼ばれる室生寺独特の模様とされています。
十一面観音さま
金堂、もう一つの国宝がこちらの十一面観音さま。
この十一面観音さまの衣も流れるような漣波式（れんばしき）。
室生寺を代表する仏様です。
衆生をもれなく救うため、十一面観音様の頭には１０の顔。

It's a national treasure believed to be created in the Heian period.
In the background, you can see the so-called itakouhai that represents a halo that is richly decorated with paintings of colorful foliage scrollwork. The clothes of the statue engulf it like water and the characteristic pattern you can spot on them is called renbashiki and is considered to be a design unique to Murouji.
Jyuuichimen Kannon, the eleven-faced Goddess of Mercy
The other national treasure enshrined in the main temple is the statue of Jyuuichimen Kannon. Her clothes feature the same unique pattern of renbashiki. It's the buddha statue that represents Murouji.
To protect as many people as she can, her head has ten faces.
