Freelancer to launch Thai site content and local currency transactions
Freelancer, a global outsourcing and crowdsourcing website, today announced that its Thai site will be launched on September 6.
Freelancer.com today announced that it will be launching in Thailand tomorrow, September 6. This will see the crowdsourcing and outsourcing marketplace further strengthen its presence in Asia by launching its Thai site content and local currency transactions.
Freelancer’s vice president for growth, Willix Halim, a keynote presenter at e27′s Echelon Ignite Thailand 2013 announced the marketplace’s entry into the Thai market. This follows closely after their announcement of their Malaysian regional website.

Halim added that the company are fully behind the Ministry of ICT’s Smart Thailand Masterplan. He shared:
“By boosting information and communications tech literacy and improving infrastructure, the ministry will allow more professionals to find work opportunities online and join the rest of the world’s professionals in progressive collaboration.”

The company’s regional director for Asia, Evan Tan told e27 that this is part of Freelancer’s aggressive entry into the Asian market. He said, “Recently, we’ve been rolling out features catered to Asian countries such as Indonesia, Philippines, India, Bangladesh, and most recently, Malaysia. Asia is a promising market with skilled professionals waiting to be tapped, and Freelancer.com is excited to connect them with startups and small businesses around the world – and even in their own home countries.”

At the moment, there have been more than 4.8 million projects worth over US$1.2 billion on Freelancer globally. In Thailand, Evan shared that there are now 23,000 users in Thailand, with 20,000 identifying as freelancers and 3,000 as small business owners. He then said, “Thai freelancers mostly take IT-related projects such as PHP, MySQL, Software Architecture, and Software Testing. Of course, we’re expecting more people to take on other projects with the introduction of special features for the Thai market.”

Freelancer is planning to launch in more countries and integrate more features and services by the end of this year. He also said that though he does not want to preempt anything, there will be partnerships with local stakeholders and companies soon.
For example, they are currently connected to the Indonesia freelancing community. He said, “We are assisting the organization with empowering Indonesian freelancers through skills development as well as information exchange. In the Philippines, we’ve also been sponsoring various tech events (hackathons, seminars, etc.).”
