Give your ideas wings.You have a number of great ideas every day, but most of us let them go by without taking any action.Take the next great idea you have, and start the steps needed to make it happen, as soon as you have the idea. Don't let the great ideas fade away without action. Use the momentum you have when you are excited about the idea, to propel you into implementing it.
You need to take action when an idea strikes you. Your emotional involvement is highest at that point and it can help propel you into action. If you wait, your urgency starts to diminish, and your great idea is lost. So start to act on your big idea as soon as it hits you and you will find you accomplish a lot more quality things.

Imagine someone who has the answers to your problem, and imagine what they would say to you about your problem. Formulate your problem into a question worded in a way you think they would understand, write it down, and then sit or stand in a different place from where you were before. Pretend you are the "expert" and say or write what you think the "expert" would tell you.

Create a board of directors for yourself. Create an imaginary group of advisors to help you make decisions. Make up a list of the top experts in the field you are making a decision in, and ask yourself what each of those people would probably tell you to do. Read their books, check their Web sites, etc., and get an insight into their thinking, then bring it back to your decision. You will be amazed by how just asking yourself how an expert you have in mind would handle it, will improve your decision making.

You also can tie this into a pattern of learning to take more chances in your life. They don't have to be big risks, but you need to learn to take more chances if you want a dif¬ferent outcome in your life. Not everything will work out, but the fact that you are taking risks, even if small ones, will add excitement to your life and give you some payoffs in terms of getting what you want.

Make a decision and if it is the wrong decision, make another decision. Stop putting off making decisions until you have all the information you need, because you will never have all the information you need. Make the decision with the best information you have, but make the decision now. Your life will suddenly fall into line with the decision you made, and most of the time things will go better for you. If things don't go right, change and make a new decision.

This holds true for you as well. In almost every field, being 1 percent better than you are now would put you at the top of your field. Start to think of how you can make small improvements in your performance, as that may be all that is needed to take you to the top.

If you are willing to do things that other people aren't willing to do, you will get things that other people won't get. If you are willing to prepare more than others do, plan more than others do, work out more than others do, etc., you will get rewards that other people won't get.

Increase your performance by 1 percent and you can be at the top of most fields. It doesn't sound like much, but look at the difference in the performance levels for the top athletes. The difference in time between first and second place for the top runners and bike racers is usually seconds for a race that took several hours. Even more amazing is the fact that this matter of seconds in that event comes after months and months, or sometimes years, of practice. Being 1 percent better than the others would have put the winners so far ahead, there wouldn't have been anyone else that came close.

Japanese Startup Phroni Gets Phunded, Raises 70 Million Yen

Anyone who attended our recent Startup Asia conference in Singapore earlier this month will recall Ikuya Yamada, who pitched his solution for a ‘smarter’ smartphone/tablet browsing experience called Phroni (see phroni.com). Yamada is part of Japan-based Studio Ousia, which announced today that it has received 70 million yen (about $864,000) in series A funding from Nissay Capital, a well-known Japanese VC.

今月初めにシンガポールで行われたスタートアップアジア会議に参加した人なら誰でも、Phroni（phroni.comをごらんいただきたい）と呼ばれる「よりスマートな」スマートフォン／タブレット体験の解決策を紹介したヤマダ・イクヤ氏を覚えているだろう。ヤマダ氏は日本に拠点を持つスタジオ・オウシアの一員で、同社は本日、日本の有名なベンチャーキャピタルのニッセイ・キャピタルからシリーズAの70,000,000円（約$864,000）の資金調達を受けたことを発表した。

The idea behind Phroni is that it analyzes the text in your browser and coverts certain words to Wikipedia links, allowing you to explore further information without the cumbersome copy and paste steps into search bars. Users can also further explore using the toolbar across services like Twitter or YouTube (see below).

Some of you may recall that a couple of our Startup Asia judges expressed some skepticism that a solution like Phroni hadn’t been done before. I recently asked Mr. Yamada about this, and he was quick to point out that while there are many services that make keywords linkable, most of them do so in the interests of advertising:

He adds that this funding will be going towards hiring new engineers for the development and the global launch of Phroni. We’re delighted to see that a Startup Asia participant is one step closer to success. We certainly wish Mr. Yamada and his team all the best as they work to bring Phroni to the world, on both iOS and Android.

Founded in the 14th century as Sinhapura, by King Parameswara and turned into a major trading center, in the 1800’s by Sir Raffles – Singapore has been at the crossroads of global commerce and culture for centuries. My earliest memories of the city are from the late 1980s. The nation was in its baby boomer days, young citizens were moving into HBDs high-rise towers, gleaming new infrastructure in places like Sentosa was being built, and there was a general sense of optimism in Singapore’s young population about what their country could become.

Almost a quarter of a century later, I am happy to see that Singapore has been one of the developmental success stories of our region. Singaporeans have shown the world what a small multi-ethnic island without any natural resources or military prowess can achieve through just human endeavor and visionary leadership.

I believe that the country now stands at an important juncture in its story. It could, like parts of the west, walk into the sunset with its aging population, or it could leverage the physical, social and economic infrastructure it has built, and become a symbol of economic hope for a new, confident and resurgent Asia.

The convergence of opportunities

The Economist recently wrote about how our world is increasingly divided into three socio- cultural spheres of influence [1], the Anglosphere, the Indosphere and the Sinosphere. The article quotes a study by Pankaj Ghemawat, ‘Why the world isn’t flat,’ [2] that two countries which share a common language trade 42 percent more with each other than two otherwise identical countries that lack that bond and countries with former imperial ties trade an astounding 188 percent more often. The article ends with a reminder on the enduring ties of tribes and how this will continue to shape the cultural and economic future of our globalized world in this new ‘Asian century.’

Along with its administrative advantages, Singapore’s unique cultural, linguistic and historic linkage to all three of these spheres is creating a situation where the country now offers some of the same ingredients that made cities like London, New York, Bombay and Shanghai great economic centers in the past.

I believe that the current environment in Singapore makes it inevitable that more than a few great global businesses will emerge from here in the coming years. Whether “natives” or immigrants start all of these is a moot point.

On a recent visit, I had the opportunity to attend Startup Asia, a regional summit for startups in Singapore and the ASEAN region. The international nature of the entrepreneurial ecosystem was evident from the various companies I came across, with Indian, Malay, Japanese, Indonesian, American etc entrepreneurs or key team members.

最近訪問したとき、私はシンガポール及びASEAN地域のスタートアップのための地域的サミットであるスタートアップアジアに参加する機会があった。私が見てきたいろいろな国（インド、マレーシア、日本、インドネシア、アメリカの起業者たち、又はその主要なチームメンバー）を見ると、起業エコシステムの国際的性質ははっきりしている。

Based on the 25+ companies I met while in Singapore, the strong Web 2.0 bias of purely Singaporean teams seemed evident. On the other hand, more international teams seemed to have a greater depth of focus on addressing regional and global consumer opportunities within healthcare, security, education and environmental technology. This is hardly surprising. In a country with the cleanest air in Asia, negligibly low crime rates and radio taxis that arrive within minutes, there don’t seem to be many visible problems to solve. When there is a cross-pollination of ideas from around the region, a more robust and interesting business focus seems to emerge within the company.

私がシンガポールにいる間に会った25社以上においては、純粋にシンガポール人だけのチームの強力なWeb 2.0バイアスが確実に思われた。一方、もっと国際的ないくつかのチームがヘルスケア、セキュリティ、教育及び環境技術における地域的及びグローバルな消費者機会を解決することにより深く焦点を絞っているようにも思われた。これは全く驚くべきことではない。アジアのなかでも空気がきれいで犯罪率が非常に低く、無線タクシーが数分で到着する国では、目に見える解決すべき問題はそう多くないと思われる。周辺地域からのアイデアの相互作用があれば、より堅固でおもしろいビジネスフォーカスが企業内で浮上してくるだろう。

In addition to government investment programs like SPRING Seeds, IDA’s Infocomm fund and numerous incubators, there seems to be an active Angel, VC and PE investor ecosystem in the country. These investors are increasingly investing in local start-ups to target regional and international markets. LPs seem to be supporting this trend eyeing cleaner corporate governance and greater exit potential of portfolio companies based out of Singapore.
