補助の内容は、会期前日の６日から10までの5日間、HKTDCまたはメッセ・フランクフルト（香港）の提携先のホテルに宿泊する新規バイヤーに参加日数に応じた宿泊代を差し引くというもの。1日参加の場合900香港ドル、2日間で1500香港ドル、3日間以上で2100香港ドル（約2万1500円）の補助となる。対象となるのは、1社につき1ホテル、１室まで。

また、同展の公式航空会社のキャセイパシフィック航空とドラゴンエアーは、展示会参加者のためだけにおいて特別航空券も用意している。

The hotel sponsorship program offers discount rates to new buyers who stay in a hotel partnered with Messe Frankfrut (HK) according to the number of days they participate in the Fair. Visitors who participate for one day will get HK$900.- allowance, and those who take part in for 2 says will receive HK1,500.-, people who attend for 3 days will enjoy a grant of HK$2,100.-. This benefit only applies to one room per hotel per company.

In addition, Cathay Pacific Airways and Dragonair, the official airliners of the Fair, have also prepared special arrangements for those who attend the event.

日本食とその関連事業を東南アジア市場に紹介する「Oishii Japan2012」が、11月１日から３日、シンガポールで開催された。
企業・団体へ向けたダイレクトな商談の場、販売促進の場を提供。日本から27都道府県、シンガポールから220社・団体が出展、5096人が来場した。
また期間中に近隣レストランのワン・オン・ザ・バンドで100種類以上の新潟のお酒が味わえる「新潟酒の陣」も開催されるなど、多くの日本食関係者、愛好家が集まった。

Japanese Food Fair held in Marina Bay Sands

“Oishii Japan 2012,” which introduced Japanese food and the related business to the Southeast Asia market, was held from November 1 through November 3 in Singapore.

The fair provided companies and organizations with the opportunity for business talks and sales promotions. Twenty-seven prefectures from Japan and 220 Singaporean companies and organizations exhibited in, and 5,096 people visited the venue.

During the fair, a special event called “Niigata Sake Battle,” where more than 100 kinds of sake can be tasted, was also held at the nearby restaurant One on the Bund, bringing many people in the Japanese food industry and Japanese food lovers together.

Oishii Japanは、世界中で”クールジャパン”として注目を集める日本食、麺（ラーメン、うどん、そば）、酒・飲料、スイーツ、食器・調理器具、食品機械、およびフランチャイズ本部など、日本食・日本食品を中心に関連するビジネス全般に焦点をあて開催。

Oishii Japan is held with a focus on the overall business which is related to the Japanese meals and foodstuffs, such as the Japanese cuisine, noodles (ramen, udon, soba), sake & beverages, sweets, tableware & cookware, food processors, and franchisors, all of which draw attention as a “Cool Japan” from the world.

The fair aims to contribute to increase the number of foreign visitors to Japan. So it supports the earthquake disaster reconstruction from overseas and tells the world of the scientifically-proved safety and security of the food as well as its deliciousness through business talks between exhibitors and buyers, in order to promote exports, popularity and inspiration of the Japanese food and its food culture.

And, of course, your app doesn’t have to be targeted just at Uyghurs or Tibetans. For example, I would love to see social apps that aim to help break down the barriers between ethnic minorities and Han Chinese, which are significant. And a Lhasa or Urumqi-based LBS service would be just as useful to local Han Chinese as it would be to Tibetans or Uyghurs so long as you included simplified Chinese text, too. There are lots of cool things that could be done with smartphone, feature phone, and web apps to serve these unique communities and solve problems that not many other devs are even aware of, let alone paying attention to.

How Do Women Shop Differently Online? Insights from Female Daily

Women are as avid online shoppers compared to its male compatriots, but is it any different in Indonesia’s male-dominated tech industry? Hanifa Ambadar, Affi Assegaf, and Novita Imelda (pictured right), three women from Indonesian female community website Female Daily Network are here to help us understand women better, as they shared their insights about their female users.

女性は男性と同じようにオンラインショッピングにどん欲だ。だが、男性が優勢なインドネシアのテック業界にその違いはあるだろうか？インドネシアの女性コミュニティーサイトFemail Daily NetworkのHanifa Ambadar、Affi Assegaf、Novita Imeldaが女性ユーザーに関する所見を語り、女性をよりよく理解するための手助けをしてくれる。

They have identified that 30 percent of all internet users in Indonesia are female. But in e-commerce, Affi says that women spend more money, which helps make online shopping a very promising market to be in. Hanifa shared more data about the female audience:

52.3 percent of women we surveyed earned between IDR 5 to 20 million per month [$522 to $2,087], 64.6 percent of them own credit cards, and spend about 13.19 percent of their income for retail shopping.

彼女らはインドネシアのインターネットユーザーの30％が女性であると確認している。だが、eコマースでは、Affiによると、男性よりも女性のほうがより多くのお金を使っているので、オンラインショッピングが参入するにはとてもいい市場となる手助けになっている。Hanifaは女性利用者に関するデータをさらに紹介した。

What do women shop for online? It’s a range of things including various fashion items such as clothing, bags, and make-up, or products for their children. Women aren’t shy to spend some dough to buy these products as some of the imported branded bags that are priced as high as IDR 100 million ($10,400) are still selling like hot cakes on Female Daily.

女性はオンラインで何を買っているのか？服、鞄、化粧品などさまざまなファッションアイテム、もしくは子供のためのものなど、いろいろだ。女性はこのような商品を買うためにお金を使うことをためらったりしない。Female Dailyでは今でも、1億インドネシアルピア（10,400ドル）もするような輸入ブランドの鞄がホットケーキが売れるような感覚で買われているのだから。

Women’s Online Shopping Behavior

So how do women decide what to buy online? The survey found that as much as 70 percent of Indonesian women get their fashion inspiration by looking at what their friends’ are wearing, both offline and online. This is especially true for beauty products such as make-up, where women rely more on customer testimonials and recommendations. This is because beauty products are quite sensitive to the different skin types that women have. A lot of women at Female Daily often help others by taking the time to talk and sharing their product experiences at the site’s forum.

それで、女性はオンラインで買うものをどうやって決めているのか？同調査から、インドネシア女性の70％がオフライン／オンラインの両方で友人の着ているものを見てファッションのヒントを得ていることが分かった。これは、化粧品などの美容商品に特に当てはまる。美容商品に関しては、女性は消費者の体験談やお勧めに頼りがちだ。美容商品は女性の肌タイプの違いにかなりデリケートな商品だからだ。Female Dailyの女性の多くは、時間をかけて対話をし、サイトのフォーラムで商品の体験談を共有して、他のユーザーを助けることがよくある。

(A lack of focus wasn’t 5 Minutes’ only problem, though; it was also bleeding staffers thanks to an inexperienced management team, and losing that round of financing is probably also indicative of poor management.)

If you’re interested in lessons from more failed Chinese startups, Ding Chenling has a whole heap of them for you to wade through. But the big lesson here is to learn from other people’s failures instead of making these mistakes yourself. So if you’re doing a startup in China, really ask yourself whether you could be making any of the mistakes these companies made. They were all well-funded, and many of them were well on their way to success when mistakes brought them crashing back down to earth. Don’t let that be you.

This gave big companies, which already had established relationships with the government and were better equipped to implement censorship, time to develop their own microblog products, and by the time Fanfou was allowed to re-open, Sina and Tencent had already left it in the dust.

The story has sort of a happy ending, though, as Fanfou founder Wang Xing went on to found Groupon clone Meituan, which has been quite successful.

Fanfouの一時的なサービスの停止は、すでに政府との関係を築き、検閲をよりよく実行していた大企業に独自のマイクロブログサービスを開発する時間を与え、Fanfouがサービスの再開を許された時には、SinaとTencentはすでにFanfouの遥か先を行っていた。

The company leadership was also inflating its numbers for the press, and using these fake numbers to brag about themselves. Investors found out, the money stopped coming in, and MySee folded.

This one doesn’t have a happy ending, either: Ding says that he saw MySee founder Gao Ran at a conference in 2010, but no one else there recognized him. He also says he has heard that some of MySee’s original investors had been telling other VCs never to invest in a project that Gao Ran was associated with.

Lesson: Pick investors you can work with.

Like everyone else on this list, things were once looking great for 24quan. At its highest point, the company was China’s fifth-biggest daily deals site, which is no small accomplishment considering that at the time there were literally thousands of daily deals sites. But when winter came to the group buy industry, only the most robust companies could survive, and although 24quan was actually seeing profits in some cities, CEO Du Yinan was having an internal struggle with his investors over control of the company.

Like with an ugly divorce, it’s hard to know who is at fault now, with both sides blaming the other, but the end result is that 24quan is on permanent hiatus.

There are rumors that Ftuan might still be interested in buying the company, so a kind of happy ending might be possible here, but even if that happens — I wouldn’t hold my breath — the price is going to be very low.

見苦しい離婚劇と同じように、今は誰が間違っているのかを知るのは難しい。両サイドともにお互いを責め合っているのだから。だが、24quanには永久的な亀裂が生じた。

Company: Weimian
Lesson: Pick your industry carefully.

Weimian was a luxury sock and stockings e-commerce company that won a big investment by catching the eye of angel investor Xu Xiaoping. But even with a million RMB in cash to play with, the company struggled and ultimately folded. The reason? Socks — even luxury socks — just weren’t expensive enough to keep up with the costs of running an ecommerce company in China. Order totals were relatively low because socks don’t cost that much, and competitors kept margins pretty thin, so Weimian wasn’t able to make much money。 Ultimately, the company folded, and at least in Ding’s opinion, it failed because socks and Chinese ecommerce don’t really mix.

Weimianは高級品のソックスとストッキングを販売するeコマース企業で、エンジェル投資家Xu Xiaoping氏の注目を引いて巨額の資金を獲得した。だが、100万元のお金があっても、同社は苦戦し、最終的には閉鎖した。理由？たとえ高級品のソックスでも、ソックスは中国でeコマース企業を運営する費用を賄うほど高くない。ソックスはそんなに高くないので、注文総額は比較的低いし、競合他社は薄利を維持している。だから、Weimianはあまり利益をあげることができなかった。最終的に、同社は閉鎖した。少なくとも、Ding氏の意見では、ソックス販売は中国のeコマースにあまり合わないから失敗したとのこと。

Of course, as we wrote recently, Xu Xiaoping invests in people, not products, and it only took him twenty minutes to offer Weimian a one million RMB investment, so I’m guessing Weimian’s founder will be able to get Xu to invest in his next project if he wants.

Company: 5 Minutes
Lesson: Stay focused on what you know.

You may not have heard of 5 Minutes, but you’ve probably heard of Happy Farm, the game Zynga copied to make Farmville. 5 Minutes was the Chinese game developer behind Happy Farm and a host of other web games, but the transition to mobile didn’t treat them well.

もちろん、私達が最近書いたように、Xu Xiaoping氏はプロダクトではなく人に投資をする。同氏がWeimianに100万元を投資すると決めるのにわずか20分しかかからなかった。だから、Weimianの創設者は彼が望む次のプロジェクトでもXu氏から出資をしてもらうことができると思う。

5 Minutesを聞いたことのない人もいるだろう。だが、おそらくZyngaが「Farmville」をつくるのにコピーしたゲーム「Happy Farm」なら聞いたことがあるのではないだろうか？ 5 Minutesは「Happy Farm」やその多くのウェブゲームを開発した中国のゲームデベロッパーだったが、モバイルへの過渡期は同社にとっていいものではなかった。

Earlier this year, the company launched its first HTML5 game and its first mobile game, but it also continued to work on web games and, ultimately, spread itself too thin. When the company’s B-round of financing fell through, it wasn’t focused enough on any one game to be generating much revenue. It also wasn’t really ready for the stiffer competition it faced from global developers in the app stores. Now, it’s dead, although reportedly it may have been split into two new companies that will work in similar spheres.

Between, a private social network for couples, hits 1.75 million downloads

Between, a mobile private social network for couples, has hit 1.75 million downloads. We last heard about the South Korean startup at Echelon 2012, where it announced a tally of 700,000 downloads, out of which 60% were active users.

These figures certainly indicate an impressive growth rate for the app, which more than doubled in downloads after just 5 months. According to Edward Lee, co-founder of Between, the app has managed to convert 80% of downloads into users, while maintaining its 60% active user rate. That would mean the app has about 840k monthly active users — giving Between reason to be optimistic.

The company beta launched their service on November 22, 2011. It is available on iOS and Android.

Beyond this milestone, Edward also told SGE through email that they are exploring ways to monetize, starting with the launch of in-app purchases in early December. Users will be able to purchase virtual sticker sets — essentially animated emoticons — through a store. The startup will release some of these emoticons to users for free from this week.

In-app purchases are also being explored by LoveByte, a similar service developed in Singapore. On that app, users can download an entire set of emotions for SGD1.28.
