Alibaba owns and operates C2C marketplace Taobao, the most popular e-commerce site in China, as well as Tmall, a B2C site for brand-name retailers.

Studies show that by 2015, China will account for over 20 percent of the world’s demand for luxury goods. While the market is still growing, however, Bain & Company reports growth is tapering off. Furthermore, Chinese shoppers do two-thirds of their luxury shopping abroad, “triggering slowdowns in store traffic and store openings domestically.” If this trend continues, Alibaba might have just put its money into a shrinking market gap.

Gudong: a fully equipped dashboard for cyclists

Combining an app with some peripherals that attach to the frame of a bicycle, cyclists can now monitor their rides more accurately via smartphone. Gudong’s smart stopwatch distance, speed, altitude, and cadence calorie consumption. Mount the phone on a set of handlebars, and you’ve got a heads-up display that can vocalize turn-by-turn directions. All your stats are stored and shared on the cloud. The project raised RMB 15,435 ($2,550) so far on Demohour, and fundraising ends on March 17.

WeChat 5.2 Supports Nine Categories of Mobile Payments

As expected, WeChat released an update today, one day after its third birthday. The same as the last update, the Android was out first and now only available on MyApp, Tencent’s Android app distribution platform (You have to download the MyApp app first in order to download the latest WeChat).

It now supports making payments for Didi (the taxi app venture backed by Tencent), Licaitong (the mutual fund, released several days ago, similar t to Alipay’s Yuebao), purchases on Tencent’s online retailer Yixun, QQ Coins (the virtual currency used in Tencent ecosystem), movie tickets, lottery tickets, making donations, phone bills and splitting bills.

Now you can get crowdsourced help in evaluating your startup idea

Last week, I happened to come across this interesting new site called Hashtaag. It’s designed to assist startups, creative people, innovators, and individuals by getting crowdsourced help in evaluating your startup idea. The theory is that all those ideas and that extra input will reduce business risks and help you avoid very early-stage obstacles.

The startup behind Hashtaag is Collisionable Networks. It’s just eight-months old and based in New Delhi. The team graduated from the six-week long T2MA program (technology to market accelerator) last October, which is run by Intel and UC Berkeley.

Though Hashtaag’s concept seems similar to crowdsourcing sites like Kickstarter or Indiegogo, Collisionable founder Paritosh Sharma likes to differentiate Hashtaag as a place for ideas, not financing or launching projects. Sharma explains:

Hashtaag is crowd helping before funding, which means startups or creative individuals facing challenges in their projects can come to our platform. And experts, evangelists, or angel investors, which we call backers, can come and help solve those obstacles and minimize risks of their projects.

Since then, the startup has found an investor in form of Rahul Gupta, the founder and CEO of Right Global Infosolutions and Evista Ventures. Gupta is backing Hashtaag and has already invested Rs 500,000 (around $8,125).

Today, Coillisionable has a small five-member team. The aim is to raise $250,000 over next few months to scale up operations and grow its technology team.

In terms of a business model for Hashtaag, Sharma says he has couple of options. One is making it into an online marketplace version of its crowdsourced ideas concept. Another option is more radical, Sharma explains:

In the Philippines, drones are used for news reporting and rescue operations

Since last year we’ve been seeing how the purpose of drones has moved outside the confinements of the military. Some startups in Asia have created drones to take aerial photos and deliver food and other supplies. In the Philippines, UNTV, a broadcasting company, is going to use drones for news reporting.

The network reports that it has already used the drones for a number of news reports, including providing aerial video footage of areas hit by typhoon Haiyan, and even in daily traffic reporting.

UNTV CEO Daniel Razon says that using drones for news reporting is a trial for a greater purpose – rescue operations.

The Philippines is often hit by natural disasters, so Razon says the network is acquiring drones that can carry life buoys and water to affected areas. It’s also looking into underwater drones to aid in some kinds of rescue operations. He claims that they are first to use drones in reporting in the Philippines.

While UNTV is lagging behind broadcasting giants in the Philippines in terms of viewers, this hi-tech could bring in new viewers. Hopefully, it can also set the stage for more organizations in the country to consider using drones for disaster recovery measures.

Yugatech reports that the network’s drones appear to be Phantom ones, made by Hong-Kong-headquartered DJI.

Encased in a rigid two-piece polycarbonate frame, the Buccaneer sports a minimalist design with no buttons and only a discrete light indicator. This unassuming facade belies its true ability though. Using a fused filament fabrication (FFF) technique for printing, the Buccaneer melts and passes filaments of polylactic acid (PLA) through a precision nozzle, with the movement of the nozzle depositing plastic in layers indistinguishable to the naked eye. This has led to it being able to print continuously for more than 200 hours, as well as reach a vertical printing resolution as high as 85 microns.

Another feature of the Buccaneer is its heated printing platform and a full-metal unibody extruder, which together with an auto-calibration functionality, allows for a smooth filament flow and precisely positioning of the printing platform for higher print quality. To communicate with devices such as personal computers, tablets, and smartphones, the printer boasts both WiFi and mobile capabilities, letting it execute print jobs just like any network-enabled paper printer.

When it comes to smart TV, of all the TV makers in China, traditional or new, Xiaomi is considered LeTV’s direct competitor. Xiaomi released its first smart TV four months ago. As Xiaomi doesn’t own a video platform, it is rumored that the company is taking a stake in Xunlei Kankan, one of the major video streaming services in China. Different from LeTV, Xiaomi doesn’t charge a fee for streaming online videos or other services while LeTV charges an annual fee.

The first LeTV smart TV was one of the first of this kind in China, so the company hoped to collect fees like cable TV subscriptions have been doing. But companies like Xiaomi, founded by a bunch of Internet service developers, don’t think charging end-users is a good idea.

In WeChat’s 5.0 update from last year, Tencent already added a function that allows users to bind a bank card to their WeChat account for online and offline purchases. LG unveiled a new software service called HomeChat, which at the moment is integrated with Line, the popular messaging app. Want to tell your washing machine to start a load? Just ping it through Line and the motors will start whirring. LG is reportedly working with WhatsApp and KakaoTalk to make HomeChat compatible on those apps as well.
