False positives occur when an antivirus program marks a legitimate file as malware. When one flags a key operating system, this can lead to computers locking up, crashing, or even failing to boot up. Google lists in more detail what false positives can lead to:

・Software developers may face strong business impact as a large portion of their users see their programs rendered unusable.

・Support teams for the affected programs may be suddenly overwhelmed by user emails claiming that the given software is not working correctly.

・End-users may be unable to interact with important software and see themselves unable to finish critical tasks.

・Antivirus vendors’ reputation may be severely hindered.

In other words, Microsoft was more than eager to help fight false positives, which often lead to antivirus and other security software attacking Windows files rather than malware. Now, VirusTotal will mark safe files at the top of its reports.

Here is an example (notice the green background, smiley face, and “Trusted source!” label):

The goal is for the antivirus vendor to correct the false positive before it can cause any (or further) damage. Mistaken detections are also dropped from the positives count and degraded to the bottom of the report. This ensures false positives do not mislead users looking at the report.

False positives hurt not just the antivirus industry but the software industry in general, and they are difficult to avoid because antivirus vendors are increasingly required to be more proactive via technologies such as generic signatures and heuristic flags. This is a great initiative on Google’s part, and one it’s looking to expand to other large software development companies.

Since Google’s acquisition, VirusTotal has also released an OS X client. Apple would be the next logical tech giant for VirusTotal to work with, but given its track record, we’re not holding our breath.

This kind of personalization is common on many websites. But not so in mobile apps, where links like this often merely take you to the start screen of the app, or maybe to a page for the Warriors game — not a shopping cart filled out with the order you specifically would want. So today Kahuna is taking a step toward changing that with its release of Dynamic Deep Linking.

Links deep inside apps don’t work like Web links in websites, since there isn’t an HTML standard for apps. In recent years, mobile deep linking has enabled a link within an app or a website to go inside another app and land on a specific screen, instead of just opening the app and showing its home screen.

But that link is specific to the content — the hotel — and not the person. Everyone who clicked on that mobile ad for Hilton Hotels would see the same Hilton Hotels screen in an installed travel app.

Kahuna is taking this one step further, by enabling links for apps to utilize the personal history of the person clicking the link. So a specific customer, for instance, might be taken from a link in a push notification about Hilton Hotels to the Preferred Guest page for Hilton Hotels in her travel app, because of her good history with the American Express card.

しかし、そのリンクは「ホテル」という内容に特定されているが、ユーザーは特定されていない。Hilton Hotelsの携帯広告をクリックした人全員が、インストールされている旅行アプリ上で、Hilton Hotelsの全く同じスクリーンをみることになるのである。

Kahunaはこの点を改良し、次のステップへと進めている。リンクをクリックするユーザーの個人的な履歴を利用できるようにしたのだ。つまり、American Expressカードの優待履歴がある特定のユーザーが、Hilton Hotelsのプッシュ通知のリンクから、Hilton HotelsのPreferred Guestページへと直接たどりつくことが出来るのである。

“It was natural for us because our core service is a platform for sharing and because we already had a threat analysis framework called ThreatData that we could build upon,” Mark Hammell, manager of Facebook’s Threat Infrastructure team, said in a statement. “Our goal is that organizations anywhere will be able to use ThreatExchange to share threat information more easily, learn from each other’s discoveries, and make their own systems safer.”

While highly targeted attacks are on the rise, many threats go after multiple targets. As a result, one successful attack often results in a flurry of similar attacks performed elsewhere.

Facebook’s argument is that existing tools for sharing security information between organizations are inefficient, complex, and frankly a burden:

Email and spreadsheets are ad-hoc and inconsistent. It’s difficult to verify threats, to standardize formats, and for each company to protect its sensitive data. Commercial options can be expensive, and many open standards require additional infrastructure.

We couldn’t agree more. When it comes to security, collaboration is much more important than competition.
