With iSnap, people can read newspapers through smart phones on their iPhone and Android ‘Nation News’ app from February 4 and Nation News currently has a download base of 208,000 and that number is expected to grow. In order for users to use this app, they need to download the “Nation News” app then choose the iSnap feature. This turns on the camera and then users can snap stories on newspapers marked with “iSnap” logo. After that, it will reproduce the stories with different formats. Not only readers will benefit from this service but the publishers as well by increasing the value of newspaper advertising as it is now more interesting and interactive.

Currently, the iSnap feature is being launched with leading newspapers throughout Asia including The Star (in Malaysia), Eleven Media (in Myanmar), Philippine Daily Inquirer, China Daily Asia Weekly, The Edge, Singapore, Kompas and The Jakarta Post, and Thailand’s Nation Group daily newspapers, said The Nation president Pana Janviroj.

iPhone no longer cool in key Asian cities, Android on the rise

The iPhone may have lost its luster in Asia, at least in key “trend-setting” cities, according to a Reuters report. Consumers in these cities are experiencing a so-called iPhone fatigue, and are driven to switch to other brands and platforms.

This effect is due, in part, to consumers’ “desire to be different” and because of the wide selection of smartphone alternatives. Chief among these is the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 — which is actually a “phablet” or superphone — which offers a mix in convenience and portability between a smartphone and tablet.

Apple remains to be a top brand, though. “Apple is still viewed as a prestigious brand, but there are just so many other cool smartphones out there now that the competition is just much stiffer,” said Tom Clayton, CEO of Singapore-based Bubble Motion, which has developed a social media app and voice blogging service called Bubbly.

This trend has encouraged bill-splitting app BillPin to diversifying into Android. While co-founder Aileen Sim says the startup initially planned to launch only on iOS, the rising popularity of Android compelled the team to build for this platform, too.

As for Singapore’s and Hong Kong’s relevance, the region looks to these two city-states for upcoming trends. “Singapore and Hong Kong tend to be, from an electronics perspective, leading indicators on what is going to be hot in Western Europe and North America, as well as what is going to take off in the region,” says Jim Wagstaff, who runs enterprise app development firm Jam Factory.

But with Android on the rise, how soon will the region’s love affair for Google’s ecosystem last, until we experience a similar “fatigue” and rally back to competing platforms like iOS, or even Windows Phone and the upcoming BlackBerry 10?

Tencent’s WeChat Has 1 Million Users in Malaysia

MIS Asia is reporting that Tencent (HKG:0700) claims 400 percent growth for its WeChat app in Malaysia since June, and currently has more than 1 million users in the country. Louis Song, the country manager for Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, commented on the app’s progress in the country to date:

We are very proud to achieve a great and healthy base of subscribers in the Malaysian market in just five months. Our team is committed to continuously improve the user experience and this will definitely be the impetus for WeChat to achieve even greater heights.

Reportedly, a number of Malaysian celebrities are using the service to communicate with fans, and that likely helps WeChat in terms of visibility.

Currently the Android version of the app is ranked 12th overall in the free app category in Malaysia, but it has been one of the top ten communication apps since back in August. On iOS it has been doing even better, and is currently ranked fifth among all free apps, and second in the social networking category.

Much like UCWeb’s mobile browser which recently surpassed 1 million Android users, WeChat is an example of a Chinese company that is leveraging the power of app stores to reach consumers around the world.

Baidu Offers Extra Cloud Storage on Some New Qualcomm-Powered Smartphones

China’s biggest search engine has buddied up with chip-maker Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) to offer extra free cloud storage to people who buy certain Android-based, Qualcomm-powered smartphones. It’ll see Baidu’s (NASDAQ:BIDU) new Dropbox-like service, called WangPan, offering those new phone-owners double the usual cloud storage space.

The deal covers phones sold in China that are powered by Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8×25 and 8x25Q chips. For people who don’t give a crap about what chips are inside their phones, it just means they’ll get more free cloud storage if they buy phones or tablets like the Huawei G330D/G330C (Ascend), Coolpad 7266, the K-touch W760, Hisense U950, or Lenovo S686. Not a hugely sexy list of hardware, but we noted last week that domestic brands now make up 60 percent of the China smartphone market – the top three are the afore-mentioned Lenovo, CoolPad, and Huawei – so this Baidu-Qualcomm deal has the potential to reach a lot of people.

How much extra storage is it worth? New phone buyers will get double the usual 15GB of Baidu Wangpan storage for free – a useful 30GB – for the duration of the phone’s lifespan.

Baidu spokesperson Kaiser Kuo explains that the Huawei Ascend model (pictured above) is particularly significant:

The Huawei G330D, which uses the Snapdragon MSM 8225 processor, is the first flagship dual-core device among the customized smartphone series issued by China Unicom.

This partnership indicates also how seriously Qualcomm is taking the China market these days, where some experts reckon there could be as many as 500 million smartphones by the end of next year. A great many of those will be running Android, and will be low- to mid-range devices that cost less than $2,000 RMB ($319).

They say you learn more from failure than you do from success. And that appears to be the theory behind a new blog post from Sinobeat Capital managing partner and Fortune China columnist Ding Chenling. In his very long post, Ding lays out the stories of 17 Chinese startups that ultimately failed, and breaks down the lessons learned. The whole thing is a bit too long for our purposes, but here are a few of the most interesting startups (and lessons) Ding picked.

Company: Fanfou
Lesson: Startups shouldn’t work in areas that could be politically sensitive.

Fanfou is actually still around, but these days it pales in comparison to its competitors Sina and Tencent Weibo, even though it was around long before either of those services. Fanfou was China’s first Twitter clone, and back in 2009 it seemed to have the world at its fingertips. 300,000 users and growing, the company had netted a big investment from HP. And although the company was doing its best to block “sensitive” words and keep political speech to a minimum, it was blocked (along with a host of other sites) following the Urumqi riots in July, 2009.

This gave big companies, which already had established relationships with the government and were better equipped to implement censorship, time to develop their own microblog products, and by the time Fanfou was allowed to re-open, Sina and Tencent had already left it in the dust.

The story has sort of a happy ending, though, as Fanfou founder Wang Xing went on to found Groupon clone Meituan, which has been quite successful.

このことにより、既に政府との関係を構築し、検閲で優遇されていた大企業は、自身のマイクロブログ製品を開発することになり、Fanfouが再開の許可を得るまでに、SinaとTencentがすでにずっと先に進んでいたのだ。

MySee looked like a company that had it all. P2P video services were hot. Investments were pouring in from all over the place. But the company burned money too fast. A few dozen employees were costing hundreds of thousands of dollars per month, and the company went all in on an expansive, ostentatious office that cost nearly $200,000 to decorate. But it also had to spend hundreds of thousands on video content, and in just a few months, it burned through nearly all of a $2 million investment.

eBay Returns to China in ‘Style’, Focuses on Luxury Clothing

As anticipated, the US auctions site eBay (NASDAQ:EBAY) has made a return, in a very low-key but stylish way, to the China market. On Monday it launched a joint-venture e-commerce store at ebay.xiu.com – dubbed “eBay Style” – that focuses on mid-range to high-end clothing, handbags, and accessories.

It features brands like Banana Republic and Clinique, right up to couture labels such as Guess and Coach. In total, there are already 5,000 brands on-board. eBay Style feels similar to the FashionVault market on its US website.

Kaifu Lee’s Innovation Works Invests in LeTV Subsidiary, Interested in ‘Super TV’

Readers with a sharp memory may be reading that headline and thinking, “Wait, didn’t we already know that?” and the answer is that yes, we did. Sort of. As we previously reported, Kaifu Lee announced several months ago that Innovation Works was interested in television and would invest in LeTV. Now, thanks to an official announcement from LeTV CEO Jia Yueting, we know that that transaction has been completed, and we know more details about the deal.

Baidu to Launch Siri-Like Service

Yue Guofeng, Vice GM of Baidu Mobile・ Cloud Computing division lately said at an event that the Chinese search titan would soon launch its own Siri-like personal assistant, probably in this month.

Speech recognition wouldn’t be a major problem for Baidu, Yue said so since the company had made some work beforehand, thinking of the voice input feature added into Baidu mobile search lately. “Voice and Visual are the two most natural interactions. Face recognition has been applied to Baidu Album, and in the future we’d love to explore more on that front, including technologies like AR. ”
