Pointer.co.id Helps to Make Life Easier for Indonesian Travel Agents

Indonesian ticket booking platform Pointer.co.id uses a B2B business model to help travel agents in the country book flights, rather than just help customers directly buy tickets. We recently had a chance to speak with Agus Ismail, the founder of Pointer regarding the startup’s progress and plans.

Pointer is still a one year-old business, and in that short time it has been used by more than 250 agents in various cities in the country. Agus says that Pointer sells more than 12,000 tickets every month and has an average daily transaction volume of 400 tickets. Pointer has partnered with 11 airlines, including Garuda Indonesia and Air Asia.

In the beginning, Agus found that there were a lot of problems booking flights, not only for customers, but also for the service providers themselves. He also saw a promising market in the Indonesian travel industry as more and more people now want to open their own travel agencies. These two observations prompted Agus to develop Pointer. He adds:

Indirectly we also provide a solution to the problems faced by consumers, while also developing the SME sector in Indonesia.

The startup doesn’t have any external investors, as it is purely funded by family and friends. One of his biggest priorities is to further facilitate travel agents and help them accelerate their businesses. At the end of this year, Agus hopes to add train tickets and hotel bookings on Pointer.

Dropmyemail Set to Pursue Opportunities in Japan, Brings on New Country Manager

Readers may remember earlier in the year when we featured Singapore-based DropMySite, a startup that aims to back up various aspects of your digital life and work, including email, chat, and calendars. Dropmyemail was subsequently launched in March at DEMO Asia, and in April announced that it had passed half a million users. I’m told that the service currently has 690,000 users in total.

Today the startup is announcing that Dropmyemail is making a push for the Japanese market, enlisting the help of Yutaka Shinohara, who will take on the role of country manager in Tokyo. In its announcement, the company notes that its partnership discussions in Japan have “come to a critical point” which requires someone on the ground in Tokyo. I’m told that Shinohara will eventually develop a team to work with partners and customers in Japan.

Overall Dropmyemail now has a five locations globally from which to push its services, including Singapore, Buenos Aires, Mumbai, and Dallas. There are 14 total staff, and the company is in the process of hiring more.

Back in June Dropmysite acquired US-based cloud backup and sharing solution OrbitFiles, further adding to the company’s overall user base of about 911,000 users (in addition to its Dropmyemail users).

India’s somewhat delayed e-commerce emergence will see its online travel market grow in sales from $11.5 billion this year to an estimated $30.61 billion in 2016. That means the sector in India will nearly triple in size in the coming years, which represents the highest CAGR (compound average growth rate) among the BRIC countries. South Korea is the only interloper in the group with its stellar growth in the market:

eMarketer points out a great deal of differences among the BRIC nations in how they’ve taken to travel e-commerce: Brazil’s market is limited in social usage and dominated by domestic travel; Russia’s lack of enthusiasm for this sector is in contrast to its high GDP; India sees three-quarters of e-commerce taken up by travel bookings; and China is, well, massive.

India’s biggest online travel service is Makemytrip (NASDAQ:MMYT), while China’s Ctrip (NASDAQ:CTRP) and eLong (NASDAQ:LONG) carve up a large swathe of that market.

BingDian Hotels App Checks-In Some Series A Funding

The makers of the BingDian Hotels app, which we looked at earlier this year shortly after it launched, has checked-in some series A funding. The round was led by California-based Bluerun Ventures, which also has an office in Shanghai and has invested in some other hot Chinese mobile startups such as the karaoke app Changba and the Pinterest-like Meilishuo.

It hasn’t been revealed precisely how much Bluerun put into BingDian with this investment, but Technode reports it to be a “multi-million US dollar” round.

In China’s very mature online travel market, BingDian is one of a number of mobile-only startups aiming to disrupt the homegrown industry leaders, Ctrip (NASDAQ:CTRP) and eLong (NASDAQ:LONG). That puts it right up against other new apps like the Innovation Works-backed Hotel Finder. BingDian says it has seen half a million downloads of its iOS app in the first 150 days after launching in March this year.

中国でとても成熟しているオンライン旅行市場には、Ctrip（NASDAQ:CTRP）やeLong（NASDAQ:LONG）など国内の旅行産業トップを崩壊させてやろうともくろむモバイル専門のスタートアップが多くあるが、BingDianもこの一つである。これは、Innovation Worksが後押しているHotel Finderのようなほかの新しいアプリに対抗するものである。BingDianは今年３月にスタートした直後の１５０日の間にiOSのダウンロードが５０万回に登ったと述べている。

But BingDian has a bit of a twist, as it claims to help hotel chains to offer discounts and benefits to loyal customers whilst still allowing them to book via the app. In theory, that makes it into a more attractive platform for major hotel brands. BingDian’s partners run the gamut from cheap business hotels like Hanting and FX right up to top-notch chains like Hyatt and Shangri-La. Plus, the app has auctions for some rooms, rather like with the American travel booking site Priceline.

しかし、BingDianにはちょっとした癖がある。というのは、ロイヤルカスタマーはこのアプリを使って予約でき、割引や特典を享受することができるようホテルチェーンに働きかけるというのだ。理論上では、メジャーなホテルブランドにとってはより魅力的なプラットフォームとなる。BingDianはHanthingやFXなどの安価なビジネスホテルから、HyattoやShangri-Laなどの高級ホテルチェーンとも提携する。その上、このアプリには、アメリカの旅行予約サイトPricelineのような、客室をオークションにかけるシステムもある。

Prior to this series A funding, BingDian and taken in two rounds of seed funding. Currently its service is only accessible via the iPhone app, and its Android counterpart has still not materialized but is said to be in development.

Trend alert: Explosion of peer-to-peer rideshare services in Singapore, parts of Asia

A slew of peer-to-peer rideshare services have gained popularity in parts of Asia in recent years, a sign that entrepreneurs are bullish that such businesses can become sustainable in their respective markets.

In Singapore, web portals like TompangBuddy and CarpoolKing have long existed as a meetup point for those who are eager to carpool.

油断ならない傾向だ。対等な者同士の相乗りサービスがシンガポールとアジアの一部で爆発的に躍進。

たくさんの対等な者同士の相乗りサービスが、最近、アジアの一部で人気を集めており、起業家たちはこういったビジネスがそれぞれの市場で持続できると強気な態度を示している。

シンガポールでは、TompangBuddyやCarpoolKingなどのウェブポータルが、相乗りを希望する人の待ち合わせ場所として登場してから、すでにずいぶん経つ。

However, the scene there is turning a corner. A second wave of rideshare services have gotten significant press coverage. A departure from Dot-Com type enterprises, many of these new startups are mobile-friendly and offer user interfaces that are more suited to modern sensibilities.

These startups can be categorized into carshare and cabshare services. Some straddle both.

しかし、この状景も曲がり角に来ている。相乗りサービスの第２波が新聞の第１面を占めた。Dot-Comタイプの企業から始まり、これら新しいスタートアップの多くがモバイルで使いやすく、ユーザーは、現代の感覚にもっと合うインターフェースを使うことができる。

Carshare-only: iCarClub is an interesting web service set to launch on 1st November. They are currently building a network of cars and car owners, and testing out a system that enables keyless entry, fuel management, an anti-theft feature, and other bells and whistles. The startup will take a 15% cut of each rental transaction. Car insurance will be included (read more on e27).

カーシェアに限定：１１月１日にスタートする予定のiCarClubは面白いウェブサービスだ。現在、車と車の持ち主のネットワークを構築しており、キーレスエントリー、燃料のマネジメント、盗難防止の対策やその他の特徴を可能にするシステムをテストしているところだ。このスタートアップはそれぞれのレンタル料より15％節約できる予定だ。車の保険も含まれる。（詳細についてはe27を参照）

Cabshare-only: GoMyWay, launched in August, lets users share a cab with people who are traveling to the same destination. The mobile app has many safety features built-in to protect and ensure the privacy of its users. A similar smartphone app that launched slightly later is Split-It, also developed in Singapore. Both apps use in-app credit purchases to generate revenue. They are facing competition from CabCorner.com, an American startup that recently launched its services in Singapore.

Both: Some companies have decided to address both needs. And why not? MyRideBuddy and ShareTransport.sg are not just offering carshare and cabshare mobile solutions, they operate web services as well. ShareTransport.sg appears to have had a good start: It claims on its website to have signed up 8,800 members since March 2012. It even has a bus sharing service.

Singapore residents seems open to ridesharing. The high cost of car ownership, which is unlikely to abate, could ensure a strong demand for carpooling. Taxi fares in Singapore are not cheap either. Singaporeans generally feel safe living in the city, and that aids trust-building.

Elsewhere in Asia, rideshare services are also showing up

According to Forbes, there are 177 million cars in Asia alone. Further, many cities in Asia are beset by traffic congestion and pollution. Rideshare services can alleviate jams, reduce pollution, and increase the income of car owners. On the other hand, they might hurt the pockets of cab drivers and public transport operators, causing them to resist such services.

アジアのほかの地域でも、相乗りサービスが登場し始めている。

Forbesによると、アジアだけで1億7700万台の車があるという。さらに、アジアの多くの町は交通渋滞や環境汚染に悩まされている。相乗りサービスは交通渋滞を緩和し、環境汚染を軽減し、車所有者の収入を増やすこともできる。一方、こういったサービスにより、タクシー運転手や公共の交通運営者の懐は厳しくなる可能性があり、サービスの運営に反対する動きも出ている。
